President's Note

What a great Changeover night...thanks to all who came.   It was a very relaxed and fun night and enjoyed by all.

Yesterday's interview session with the year 9 Auburn High School students  generated a buzz of satisfaction among us all who came along.   Special thanks to those "partners" who complemented our own team of mock employers-Jane Bentley, Jane Drury, Libby Owen, Ralph Treloar and Susan Wright. They necessarily made up the numbers.

Ian Bentley's review at our last lunch meeting of the new Rotary and legal obligations re working with children certifications was appropriately informative just before our Auburn High visit.   They sound tough but understandable when one considers the requirements imposed by Rotary (and our clubs) insurers.

Just one last meeting for me to host, I will miss the role!

See you next Tuesday at Kooyong.

Rotary's Process...Working with Children
Ian Bentley has been busy understanding for our club the ramifications and obligation of new and more stringent "Working with Children" laws which were introduced in 2017 against the backdrop of the Royal Commission findings on past abuses on children in the community and various organisations.

His address to the club highlighted and explained many of the new requirements and reasons for them.
 Some key points were:-
Pedophilic statistics note possible offenders approach 2-5% of the adult  male population.

Offences have criminal penalties and harsh financial fines

Relates to employers (with a very wide definition catching volunteers such as HRC)

Any intentional or advance knowledge of interaction with children needs WWC clearance

Rotary District's advice is that an individual members WWC must be complemented with the Rotary Youth Declaration Form.    (Ian noted and thanked HRC members for their 100% compliance).

The separate legal entity nature of HRC necessitates that it have rigid processes and record keeping re the WWC issue to satisfy the law but most importantly to comply with our (and Rotary's) Insurer's demands and hence not invalidate any claims on which we seek relief.

Changeover Night

Thursday evening on 14 June at Greenacres Golf Course Dining Room was Hawthorn Rotary changeover celebration.  MC Charlotte England kept proceedings under control and flowing.

With numbers expanded significantly by numerous guests including DG Brownyn Stevens and local MP and member John Pesutto, and warm (and short) speeches and presentations of awards by outgoing president Katrina Flinn and incoming president Ian Bentley  the evening was relaxed and highly enjoyable.

The entertainment was superb with soprano Shimona Rose providing a delightful interlude of songs from classical and modern popular musicals, Puccini, Gershwin and Webber.

Ian Bentley foreshadowed an interesting year to come with quotes reminding us of our allotted span of 650,000 hours and the 2018-19 Rotary International theme "Be an Inspiration".

Although black tie and evening gown one notes from the photos the evening was fun and attendee interactions far from formal.    https://photos.app.goo.gl/Abw1HmuiftiBS2Yh7

Mock Interview Day 20 June
The first of the two mock interview sessions at Auburn High saw 20 of out numbers as "employers" grilling 70 Auburn High Students pursuant to their job applications.    Although the students were young (year 9) the interviewers were taken back, notwithstanding an understandable degree of nervousness in the students, by their stories and inherent capacity.    Most of us blushed in comparison in recalling our own state of development at 14 and 15 years old.

It on again with the year 10 students on July 25, please let Geoff Wright know if you can be an "employer" for that morning.

Our photographer took some of shots of some stressed and serious employers.

Salvo Hawks - Diary Dates for Home Matches
Please put the following important dates into your diary - now!    Remember a key aspect of HRC's support is the provision of communal interaction not just funds.

Next home game is Wednesday June 27,

       then Wednesday July 11

        Wednesday August 8

Typically on these Wednesdays we will need at least 3 (preferably 5) Rotary Hawthorn people:

  •  1 or 2 people on scoreboard 11.45 – 2.00
  •  At least 2 people mingling and organising pizzas say 12.15 – 2.15
Make-ups and Apologies

Helen Kavnoudias (in the absence of Lawrence Reddaway) always seeks to finalize numbers by Monday 8.30am by collating  responses about attendance at the next meeting.   So please try to email back to her by that time; and, at the same time, forewarn of any guests.   Predicting our numbers as closely as possible helps to minimize our catering costs.)

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.
