President's Note

It was terrific to see so many members & guests at our meeting this week wearing their hats and contributing to Australian Rotary Health’s “ Hat Day”.

Also a big thank you to the members and spouses that supported us in planting trees at with Rotary Club of Kew Hays Paddock in Kew East. It was also a valuable opportunity to gain insights ahead of our community tree-planting day at Fritsch Holzer Park, Hawthorn East next year.

At the Board meeting this week, we approved in principle support for a new project, which is being lead by Rotary Club of Chadstone/East Malvern in area near  Baguia, Timor Leste. (see photo of water tank and toilet at school)
See you next week!

Australian Rotary Health Hat Day
Lift the Lid” on is the Australian Rotary Health quip for raising awareness of mental illness.  Unfortunately our speaker, Neil Cole had to call off at the last minute because of family matters.  We hope he can visit us later.

Our stand-in sergeant Kevin Rose did a marvellous job to fill in the program, raising some cash by testing our spelling, as well as raising awareness for ARH.

President Katrina dispersed several prizes for the funny hat brigade, with Sheridan Brown winning the most spectacular and David Pisterman the most debonair.

Visiting Carlton Rotarian Thierry Dismathieu helped fill the program, firstly by introducing his parents Josie and Pierre, both French Rotarians, and then telling us a little about differences between life in France and Australia, before adding some facts about his own club.

These visitors were presented with Hawthorn Rotary banners, as were visitors David and Toni Thomas from Hong Kong South RC.

We all enjoyed this informal and relaxing lunchtime meeting.

Tree Planting Day
We joined with several of our cluster clubs to participate in a tree-planting day at Hays Paddock in Kew, as inspired by RI President Ian Riseley.

Many volunteers turned up and fortunately we had Peter from Parks and Gardens to keep us right.  Down and dirty we got, and planted a couple of hundred Poa labillardierei and a couple of other species whose names escaped me.

But basically that tussocky native grass, that golfers like Richard Logan hate, for some obscure reason. Athough not exactly trees, the planting provides undergrowth to maintain the soil and appearance of the native garden.

President Katrina produced a lovely barbecue which we all enjoyed. (especially the dogs, who had worked so hard to water the freshly planted tussocks).

Well done team: a lovely relaxing “hands-on” Rotary event.

Just watch those "Men at work"!

Overcoming obstacles to polio eradication
Alina A. Visram first joined Pakistan's National PolioPlus Committee as a manager eight years ago, when polio eradication in her country seemed within reach. Then hostile militants and other obstacles altered the dynamics, and forced a change of tactics. This year, the country has only five cases of polio. In her blog post for World Polio Day, Visram shares why she is convinced we will eradicate this disease.

The Shadow
When DOES David Owen get back from holiday?  The elves who volunteered to produce the bulletin in his absence had no idea how much effort David puts into the bulletin each week: they are muttering about striking for a wage increase. So we hope David returns soon, refreshed and ready to resume his post.

Bernie Walshe and David Pisterman were spotted in deep discussion on the Kooyong balcony: we offer no prizes for guessing the topic.

World Polio Day
How Rotary clubs are celebrating World Polio Day (24th October)
From red ponchos to pub crawls, Rotary clubs are coming up with a variety of ways to promote polio eradication in October. In eastern Ontario and western Quebec, Canada, thousands of Rotary members will put on red ponchos and march through the streets of their towns to raise awareness.
What should we do to celebrate?  Pub crawl?  Hmmmmm . . . .

Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.
