President's Pen
Our final lunch gathering was a lovely informal one, with lots of good cheer topped off by guest Ros McMorrow's (AG ) short address on her cooking passion.  The tale of her skill and endurance in making hundreds of jars of preserves for sale by her own Chadstone-East Malvern club over the years was remarkable, almost matched by auctioner Simon O'Donogue's skill in keeping an unruly set of bidders,  seeking to purchase some samples, under control.

Thanks to MC David Corrigan for chairing a fun day, and a final one to all members for their support during the first half of the year.   In particular most recently to Noel Halford and everyone at last Sunday's Lunch for the Boroondara community.

Have a great break and see you all next year

The Boroondara Christmas Lunch
Once again the Christmas Lunch which we along with other groups manage and host in the Sunday before Christmas was a great success.   All club hands were on deck along with many other volunteers at Camberwell High and under Noel Halfords lead we were able to provide a memorable and highly sociable occasion for up to 250 attendees.   Aimed at the socially isolated and disadvantaged residents of the Boroondara area it was heartwarming to see so many of them enjoying the day and fellowship with fellow residents.

Santa(looking a bit like Bernie Walshe) came long distributing donated gift packs and John Blackman was a great MC albeit his quick wit sometimes took time to digest along with the christmas food.

Noel  later told  the story of how at the supermarket he and some helpers were loaded up with some of the food in many trolleys, and in response to a query  "what's it all for?" from a fellow shopper  explained about  the lunch.  Said lady picked up the tab, sought no special recognition and only offered a name "the Redhead from St Dominics".   Wonderful.

Action at the Hams Delivery
Early morning at the Kooyong Tennis Club car park was a hive of activity last Wednesday.   It was collection time for all those hams, cakes and chocolates which our club has sold in the past few weeks.     Chief ham Phil Stewart and his numbers man Richard Logan had a band of helpers from our club.

It was too early for our regular photographers but another stepped in.    Richard reported that "The sales went smoothly with no queues so no bulk numbers in photos. Hope they are up to scratch".    Yes they are, and we have uncovered a good reserve.

A Happy Christmas Story

Often its not what you know but who you know, that gets the job done.  Peter Lugg had obtained a couple of Image Intensifiers to include in his projected container to Cambodia, and we wondered if they were in safe working order: these X-Ray machines generate a whole lot of radiation, but who would know how much leaks out?

The story of the all who came to the help is a wonderful Christmas Story in itself.

The Shadow
The Shadow was a keen observer to the impromptu auction which Simon O'Donoghue ran to sell those preserves generously donated by visiting AG Ros McMorrow.   A great job Simon and Ros, although it seemed to The Shadow that Simon sold the same jar several times....very clever.

What was most interesting was the table talk as the auctioned proceeded.   "Quick go get it before the price goes up".     "His jar is bigger than mine, yet I paid more".  Oh dear the Four Way Test was stressed, but still it was a fun occasion and good modest fund raiser.....
Garden Design Fest ...aftermath
Our efforts at the recent GardenDesign Fest where we helped host several gardens was a pleasant interlude for many although at times we were overstaffed at some locations.   Our Charity Fund prospered by $4000, and as always all of it will be consumed in the various Rotary community projects in which we participate.
Kooyong Car Parking

This year the tennis runs from Tuesday 10 January to Friday 13 January.   The Roster for the many two hour shifts of car parking supervision has been well circulated and there are still a few spots to fill---most notably Wednesday.

Thanks to all those members who have slotted in their name for a stint----remember friends and relatives are welcome too. Please consider and let me know if you can help.
