President's Note

Thank you to those supported the Club leaders by attending our AGM today
2017 financials and Annual report were accepted by the Club acknowledging the successes of the 2016/17 under the stewardship of last year’s President Meredith Hayes who is now busy making her mark in the Nation’s capital.

I would like to support Rotary International President Ian Riseley in his request for us to plant a tree for each of our members. We will join with other cluster clubs to plant trees in Hays Paddock Kew on 8th October 2017. It is a simple example of using our collective effort to make a difference.

On thesubject of tree planting, those that are long time members would know that Fritsch Holzer Park in Hawthorn East was a Rotary Hawthorn initiative. Nextyear, the park turns 21 (or at least it is 21 years since it was formally opened). It is proposed to hold a tree planting day to coincide with National Tree Day next year and use this event to promote the club and its association with the park’s initial creation.

I am very much looking forward to our inaugural Thursday evening meeting, which is being held at The Auburn Hotel (The Geebung) this coming Thursday.
See you next week (or perhaps Thursday night as well!)

Katrina

Public Speaking at Swinburne University
Charlotte England presented a report on the recent public speaking course at Swinburne University, which had 19 participants, many of whom had English as a second language.  Charlotte acknowledged the enthusiastic input from Ngaire Cannon and David Rush.

The course was presented as a series of small exercises building upon each other, and the increasing confidence of students was obvious as the course progressed.
The final challenge to give a talk about Rotary produced some outstanding presentations.
Swinburne University has invited the club to repeat the programme next year.

Meanwhile, Ngaire Cannon has started a public speaking course at Auburn High School, which is proving popular among the students.
A Snippet from Facebook

Congratulations to Jim Studebaker from North Balwyn Rotary who was presented with the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service for outstanding service to the Foundation and Doing Good in the World. A rare honour as only 150 are presented worldwide each year. How fantastic is this!!!  Congratulations Jim!
When Ideas Have Sex
I was so impressed by Peter Fenwick’s talk last week on “Taking responsibility for ourselves and our families” that I checked out his website.
Apart from a video of the book launch of Peter’s book “The Fragility of Freedom: Why Subsidiarity Matters”, I found a most informative “TED Talk”  by Matt Ridley, which I recommend to you: https://www.peterfenwick.com/videos

In “The Rational Optimist”, Ridley argues that our prosperity is due to our willingness to trade with strangers. This enables the division of labour and permits us to specialise, to work on the things we are good at. That encourages us to innovate, to make tools and machines and processes that make our production more efficient.

We trade ideas too. We learn skills from experts and build on what has gone before, so a communal intelligence develops. Prosperity increases exponentially.

The prologue to The Rational Optimist, “When ideas have sex” became a 16-minute TED conference talk and  has been viewed more than 2 million times.
DIK Update

Yes, this lonely-looking container is ALL OURS! It is quietly sitting at DIK, beside Shed 40, 400 Somerville Road, West Footscray.
Some old friends have come out of the woodwork to help load it and send it on its way.
Ian Macfarlane has a list of over a dozen able-bodied (and some pretty shonky) volunteers who look forward to a fun day.
Bring a biscuit or two for morning tea, if you suspect your energy levels may fall.
Give Ian  (98130548 or 0418104971) a call to add your name to the list for Saturday 23rd September from 9.00 onwards.

Plant a Tree
Rotary International President, Australian Ian Riseley, has called upon Rotarians the world over to priotise the environment amongst Rotary programs.

In answer to the call to plant more than 1.2 million trees worldwide, one for every Rotarian, The Rotary Club of Hawthorn will join with the Rotary Clubs of Glenferrie, Kew and Yarra Bend to plant trees at Hays Paddock, Leason Street Kew East on Sunday October 8th 2017 at 10:00am.
A barbecue lunch will be served from 12 noon.
The City of Boroondara has kindly agreed to provide 200 trees and will prepare the ground and provide some tools (although don't hesitate to bring your favourite implement!).
The morning promises to be very pleasant indeed, enjoying the outdoors, the company of friends old and new, and contributing to making a difference to the Earth.

We have 16 volunteers already!
Come along and enjoy the fun.
Looking forward to seeing you with shovel and gumboots:

Rotary is at a Crossroads
That was the resounding message that General Secretary John Hewko had for Rotarians when he graced the Rotary Hills Zone multi-club meeting hosted by RC Beecroft.

Throughout both GETS and Institutes in Darwin and in Auckland, John challenged Rotarians in this region to try new ways of addressing the decline in membership. He urged everyone to see this part of the world as a laboratory, testing different ways to meet, asking the tough questions why Rotary is not attracting more members.

Membership is central in Rotary’s strategic plan of strengthening and supporting clubs, focusing on humanitarian service and enhancing Rotary’s public image and awareness. These three are closely interwoven and the focus on humanitarian service particularly ensures member engagement.

The Shadow
The Shadow is on holiday, but his resident-in-training gnome is happy to publish any gossip: just whisper in the right ear.

Noel Halford has over 30 interested people coming to his Rotary information meeting at the Auburn Hotel on Thursday evening. Charlotte England is preparing a slide-show, and there will be facts galore about Rotary for anyone who wants to listen.  It should be a fun evening, and we keenly await Noel's report on the proceedings.
The Auburn Hotel?  Wasn't that the Geebung Polo Club in Auburn Road? I'm sure participants will work it out.
