President's Pen

With all the disrupted calendar and alternate events in the next couple of week not sure if this was my last Tuesday as president but  it was another fine meeting.  With two stints as president I can say both have been wonderful and enjoyable experiences.  Looking forward to the last formality at the changeover on the 29th, please come if you can make it.   Thanks to Ngaire Cannon who is acting as the focal point for attendance queries.

Thanks to MC David Corrigan for his usual great fines session. Guest speaker John O'Reilly with management lead from spouse Stevie addressed us on the SkyHydrant project---you may recall our club has been a significant contributor to it.

Next week's meeting has moved to Friday with the joint session with Kew RC.   Chris Hanson is keeping the list of our attendees.

Hope to see you there.

Meredith

Disaster Aid Australia  ...John O'Reilly
Disaster Aid Australia ("DAA")is a project of the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills, Victoria Australia.  DAA is affiliated with Disaster Aid international.

Guest speaker John O'Reilly gave a brief description of the overall Australian project and in that highlighted the outstanding success and repute of one of its most successful and known products namely the SkyHydrant water purification unit.

John with a background in finance, followed by years running his own fashion label business and now semi-retired? is Treasurer for DAA.

His address aptly titled "A Child Not Having Drinking Water is a Disaster" included a succinct description of the device and some detail of its use in the near neighbor countries.  These were ones which had experienced recent disastrous storm damage and disruption.

A particular example of its application was as part of efforts of the Disaster Aid Team in the north eastern region of the Philippines subsequent to their extreme monsoonal conditions last year.    John showed photos of many happy childhood  faces holding cups of "fresh" water.

Picture Below: President Meredith Hayes, MC David Corrigan and John embracing the SkyHydrant.

The Shadow
The Shadow has delved deep into the past.  Spouse of guest speaker John O'Reilly (pronounced "oreally") Stevie has a prior connection with Hawthorn Rotary.  Rotary Hawthorn sponsored her family in 1958....(ie: wife is Stevie Guilmartin) by loaning them a home in Balwyn when they came out from the U.K.!

How amazing, nearly outstanding as the shock realisation that members Rush, Deveruex and Walshe got a la carte meals at the same meeting.   Oysters, smoked salmon and exotic sandwiches are evidently on the menu to those in the know.

Servants Housing Going for an Award
It is exciting to note that  Servants has been shortlisted for the IKEA "Living Local Community Grant."  They are one of three projects in the running. Their submission is a plan to refurbish the dining/living area at Hamer Court - if successful, this will take place with an IKEA design team and product!

This is a really exciting opportunity for Servants and the Hamer community, but it is decided by a public vote! That means the result is up to you. The winning submission will be the one that receives the most votes. So please - vote for their project!

The easiest way is to click this link; IKEA.com.au/vote <http://ikea.com.au/vote>

There is no sign in process, you simply have to select your local IKEA store and then select Servants as the submission you wish to vote for!

There will be posting on the Servants link, and any updates from IKEA, on their Facebook - so make sure you've 'liked' the Servants Community Housing page!  Evidently one "like" the IKEA facebook post

Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.
