President's Pen

Thanks again to all those who attended our last lunch meeting. It was designed to stimulate committee interactions and worked very well this time.  Everyone seemed to get involved and all reminded of what  programs and activities we spend our time on and the manpower effort needed.

The current plan is to have these regularly with the next one due in a month or so.   The perceived needs, and feedback from us all, re this approach will determine the frequency long term.

See you all next week for our regular speaker driven lunch meeting.

Committee Day at lunch time Meeting
It was Committee Day at our last lunch time meeting.

Embarking on a different approach to the management and consideration of possible programs in the club we split in several  tables for lunch, broadly in line with different Rotary streams.  There was some common thread between those seated at each table, for example those involved with club service matters were together as were the Community and International members.

It was nice to report that notwithstanding this was a way of ensuring committees met with ALL members present (often difficult task in the past with out of time specially arranged meetings) there was still a broad involvement across  the room and no lack of cross participation…how could there be when it soon became evident that any one given individual really had a toe in each camp for their roles in 2016/17?

After significant meaningful deliberation at each table President Meredith Hayes called upon various members to elaborate on plans and goals for the year ahead re certain items.  Again this proved very fruitful  in informing all in the club of what was going on and at  a detailed level.

Impromptu reports told of Speaker lists,  Program Coordination contrasting funding ones with community ones , Bulletin and Web site plans, Friends of Rotary thrusts, Administration practices re attendance and Front Desk roles, Membership matters, stronger ties with Boroondara Cares,  and of course Fellowship activities.  The latter reiterated the place for home hosting and outlined ideas for up to 7 social events during the year to enhance Fellowship among members and spouses.

The meeting was summed up most poignantly by President/MC Meredith.  She commented on the energy and pleasure exhibited at the meeting. Then observed that that each table/committee, had the challenge to now  determine short term actions for August.     Reports back to the next like lunch time meeting will keep us all aware of our progress and perhaps dictate how often this type of session should happen.

How the Debating Course came about?
It was just a chance comment in conversation with a friend (who incidentally is also a Rotary Club of Hawthorn friend) who indicated he was helping a Swinburne student with English that sparked an interest. Could there be a role for Rotary in such a program?

I called Elena Verezub, Coordinator, Learning and Academic Skills (LAS) Centre at Swinburne. She liked the idea and so together with Noel Halford we had a coffee. Half an hour later, subject to student interest, we were committed to presenting a public speaking course! The aim of this short course was to add value on to the existing suite of activities (including workshops on ‘Oral presentation skills’) offered by the LAS Centre.

Within 24 hours, Elena advised that 13 students had responded and could we start on 22nd June! What had I let myself in for?!!

That did not leave much time, so Noel and I called on the resources within the club. Ngaire Cannon, with a teaching and training background, and Ken McNamara with his experience in local government and dealing with people, responded enthusiastically.

We prepared a program of four seminars of 2.5 hours each for 4 consecutive Wednesdays.

At the first session, Ngaire gave a detailed presentation on all the issues of public speaking with good interaction with students. The second week, Noel presented on meeting procedures, the decision making process and time management, again with participation. The third session was a debate on the topic “That freedom of speech is paramount”. Each team had two members as mentors to assist with the proper structure for presentation and to develop the arguments.

The students rose to the occasion and spoke fluently while thinking quickly on their feet. We could see the skills that Ngaire had presented coming to the fore!

Our fourth session was the real highlight. Each student gave an address (without notes!) on a theme explained by Ngaire. The speech had to describe an incident or some circumstances in their life, explain its significance and what was the lesson derived.

The speeches were simply brilliant. Some were quite emotional, others inspiring and motivating while others humorous, but all captivating.

At the end of the program students were presented with Certificates of Participation from Swinburne University and Rotary Club of Hawthorn.
It was a delight for us to see the confidence of the students and how they had grown during the training. The students all had English as a second language, which presented an extra challenge for them.

It was also very rewarding at the end the session to chat informally with the students, who were an outstanding group of young people from different parts of the world.

The results of a post program survey showed that all students indicated their increase in confidence, considered materials presented in the program engaging and informative and enjoyed presenting in front of their peers and coaches at the last session. The students also stated that they would recommend this program to other Swinburne students.

Special thanks go to Noel, Ngaire and Ken.  It was a significant commitment, and their experience and professionalism ensured that this was a successful Rotary project. And a special acknowledgement to the District Governor Neville John, who with some of our club members, attended our final session.

The Shadow Noted
The Shadow noted how loose lips can still sink ships or at least provide a husband some strife.   Not really so for our John Lane who wondered how last weeks behind the badge article  could  mention that he enjoyed singing but was always conscious of the talent next to him in a choir.  The Shadow thinks  "flat" or "out of tune" is really in the ear of the beholder, but still where would such a thought have come from?

Make ups and Apologies

Remember Geoff Wright collates attendance information and he needs to be told of  "make up " events which we attend.

Tell Noel Halford days before of an inability to attend Tuesday.  Late or non apologies raise catering costs.

Also please alert him to attending guests.   Unforeseen higher numbers make problems for a surprised chef in supplying all meals simultaneously.
