A New President

As has been the practice in the Bulletin in recent years the incumbent president is always able to have the first word (maybe last too!).

Meredith Hayes is the club president for the new year 2016-2017 and she took us through some of her  thoughts in the first lunch time meeting for the new year.

We all wish her well and our encouragement and support for a good year at Hawthorn Rotary.

A Final Pondering
As a now Past President just.....thank you all for the support for a very enjoyable 2015-2016.

How the year has rushed past!  And I’m so glad that it ended (for me) with a Changeover Dinner that was fun and invigorating.  There are no ‘feather dusters’; and everyone in the club has at least one job to do.  I’m looking forward to serving under President Meredith, who has lots of good ideas, and lots of enthusiasm to see them implemented.

I was also delighted to attend the DG Changeover Lunch, which was another happy event, full of good humour and looking forward.  And there are other club changeover dinners yet to be eaten!

First Meeting of Year ..Highlights
The new Rotary year kicked off with its first meeting, all about us as a club.

Trevor Jones as Sergeant happily lampooned splits in the community (as exemplified by the UK response to EU involvement) and exploited that theme while extracting coin from the audience.   Trevor may be the last, as henceforth we will multi task with an MC for the meeting who will in sequence :  open it, introduce the President, come back and extract coin akin to a sergeant, introduce/host the speaker, and finally hand back to the President to close.

President Meredith Hayes outlined her view of the  goals and challenges for the club and all (reminding us that every Rotary member needs to be involved) and then introduced David Rush to give a summary of Foundation ( this is its centenary year) and Bernie Walshe on the Paul Harris Society.   The former is having an anniversary evening on the 25th of July and one should see David about attending, whereas the second is a means by which significant focused donations can be made to the Australian Rotary Foundation Trust for eventual use by the Rotary Foundation ( Bernie can provide details of the how).

Hawthorn Rotary Changeover

The BIG moment of the Changeover Dinner, on the left President Elect (and also Past President) Meridith Hayes becomes President, and President Lawrence Reddaway (himself once a President Elect too) becomes Past President.   What charm/agony in these extended titles!

It was a great fun night.

Recognitions and Awards
Concurrent with  changeover time is the Rotary practice of awards to clubs and individuals as recognition of contributions to the Rotary effort in the past years(s).

Hawthorn Rotary got some mentions.

VANCE HILTON COMMUNITY SERVICE RECOGNITION

DG Changeover

A happy group from Hawthorn Rotary enjoyed mingling with other Rotarians at the DG Changeover at the RACV Club on Sunday.

DG Julie Mason summed up her year in office, and presented PDG John Wigley with a Citation for Meritorious Service, the highest award that a Rotary District can give. PDG John retires after several years as  District Director of the Rotary Foundation.

DG Julie then invested Neville John with the Chain of Office, and the new DG outlined his plans for the coming year.

The enjoyable lunch was rounded of with musical entertainment.

The whole armory of photos of the event demonstrating the skill and persistence of the photographer can be viewed at

The Shadow Noted
The Shadow at DG Changeover

The Shadow has heard that our very own PDG Dennis Shore, at the DG Changeover Lunch,  made a good fist of proposing the toast to Rotary International.   Not an easy gig:  How to say the same stuff in a new way?  How to say enough without being accused of being a typical PDG and talking for too long?

At the Rotary Hawthorn table, who was it who skilfully spilled the water but not the wine?

Did all the engineers contribute to the building of a rather lack lustre house of cards (when compared with other tables)?  These engineers were heard to mutter that it was an historical allusion to “Strarch”.  This, The Shadow has learned, was a technical triumph of yesteryear that turned into a commercial flop!

Members Handbook

The Hawthorn Rotary members handbook for 2016-2017 is available and already copies have been picked up by many.  Those orphan copies will be available, although maybe not necessarily on display, at the front desk, just ask if you have yet to get yours.

John Carre-Riddell was the first to pick up a typo,  his phone number is 9817 2404 contrary to  the printed version and moreover he seeks a phone call from every member!  Why?
Fees Due for 2016-17
With the end of the financial (Rotary) year near and the friendly email from our Treasurer one is  reminded that fees for next year will soon be due.   Doubtless the Front Desk will extend its service and happily accept them in the next couple of weeks or so if a member is unable to use other more sophisticated means.

July 12th External Meeting
A change from the usual Tuesday format is planned for 12 July.

The Camberwell Art Show is being held at Swinbunre, and the plan is for us to have a lunch at Swinburne and then enjoy a tour of the Art Show, with an art expert critic providing commentary.

Please advise  Chris Hanson or Noel Halford of attendance to facilitate catering numbers

Injured List

Dennis Shore under the weather with a heavy dose of cold-flu did the right thing by not attending our last meeting and possibly infect us all.  We look forward to him leading us through the recent changes to Rotary's constitution another time and wish him well.

Make ups and Apologies

Remember Geoff Wright collates attendance information and he needs to be told of  "make up " events which we attend.

Tell Noel Halford days before of an inability to attend Tuesday.  Late or non apologies raise catering costs.

Also please alert him to attending guests.   Unforeseen higher numbers make problems for a surprised chef in supplying all meals simultaneously.
