President's Ponderings
It was good to go away for a brief 12 days.

Our journey took us to Warsaw (presenting a paper at an international fire safety conference; just ask me about if you have a spare 20 minutes!); London (visiting a University friend and doing modernish historical things – including Churchill’s underground war time cabinet rooms); and Cambridge (visiting another University friend and visiting childhood and University places.)

Equally it is good now to be back in the family orbit and in the Rotary scene.  I was not surprised to find that Rotary Hawthorn had proceeded magnificently in my absence.  Sad I missed Tom Burns; and sad not to take part in the humungous hospital-bed hauling heist.

Front page of the Progress Leader?  We’re getting almost regular appearances.  This time Sujay Capoor and Friend-of-Rotary-Hawthorn Suzanne Dunlop.

SecondBite is one of my favourite causes – saving good food from the tip.  So it was pleasing that our Saturday-by-Saturday collecting, and our modest $200 contribution, were recognised in a certificate that I was pleased to hand over to our Second Bite Supremo Ian Macfarlane.

Changeover season is almost upon us.

I commend to you all the District Governor Changeover Lunch (from Julie Mason to Neville John) on Sunday 26 June at RACV Clubin the City.  I predict it will be a very lively affair celebrating two great people.

President-Elect Meredith and I will be busy attending the changeover dinners of the other clubs in our Riverside Cluster (i.e. Glenferrie, Yarra Bend and Kew.)  And, of course, our own Rotary Hawthorn changeover dinner is on Thursday 23 June – one of our very few “almost compulsory” events!

Tim Lane..A View from the Commentary Box

It’s a great skill to be able to take the microphone and proceed apparently effortlessly to entertain and inform an audience with an interesting discourse of a range of subjects.  Such is the skill of a top public broadcaster. Tim Lane fits that bill.     That's him above between the two Rush's.

Last  week as guest speaker,  the well known and enduring sports caller,  after a brief introduction from Chairman David Rush took us through  44 years of his commentating career and observations in sport.   Aside from perhaps the hint of bias toward the exploits of one particular AFL team (albeit countered by the Chairman’s bias to another) his observations were very insightful.

Tim moved to Melbourne from Tasmania in 1979.  Foremost known for his association with Australian Rules (at last count he'd broadcast 31 VFL/AFL Grand Finals) he has a far broader broadcasting capacity, gained  during three decades with the ABC, broadcasting international cricket for 15 years and covering five Olympics Games.

His address started with a timely review of the career and life  of recently passed boxing great Muhammad Ali.

Then we learnt of how Tim got into the business years ago after a chance meeting at a pub with a local Tasmanian football broadcaster and an attitude to have a go and grab the opportunity. “One never knows where these things lead” is the thrust of his current advice to young people seeking a career.

Forty-four years were summarised with some memorable key points.   In 1972 there was black and white TV, the Munich Games and terrorism, and in 1977 colour TV and the start of TV’s intrusion and influence via rights payments  into directing sports.  Taking us up to the present he reflected on, successive Olympic boycotts, the West Indies Cricket dominance, then Australia’s, drugs in sport, match fixing, and the changing style of AFL in recent years and the general demise of "innocence'' and sport for pleasures sake.  He noted now in the AFL it is  often characterised by one dominant team playing positive football and rest all focusing on defensive football to catch up. Only the former is attractive notwithstanding the element of tension does exist for the fans in many low scoring contests.

In cricket, again there has been a dramatic change in the game arising from the T20 format and inherent predictable style it creates.

Tim expressed some personal views that not all of these changes have been welcomed by him, and in so doing quickly resonated with the older audience.   A poignant recall was of the senior  umpire in the early 1980's seeking to halve free kicks from 80 per match (today its about 20!) to keep the game moving.  One on one skill contests prevailed at the time.   He wondered if this trend had given rise to the rugby like roving maul of today's game and questioned its merit.

Branching into print, Tim contributes regularly to The Sunday Age and recently, with co- author Elliot Cartledge, wrote his first book. Titled 'Chasing Shadows', the book is an account of the life and death of cricket writer and broadcaster, Peter Roebuck'.    It should be an easy-to-read flowing account, in the manner of his wonderful address to us.

The Shadow Noted
The Shadow reckons that without Rotary Hawthorn, travel company profitability would reduce markedly.  President Lawrence recently patronised Emirates and LOT.   Trevor Jones regularly travels whichever airline is giving him a free-bee.  Ian Warren and Jenny are about to go travelling to almost everywhere between July and October, and will presumably be guest of at least three airlines, two railway companies and four local bus lines; and wear out at least one pair of shoes each.

Ah, the English language and its spellings and its pronunciations provide such a fertile ground for witty (?) comments:

Soon-to-be-President Meredith was speaking about the multiple roles that each of us is to take on next Rotary year. The Shadow overheard one jokster pointing to one of our guests and saying “we have some roles right here”  Which guest?  Geoff Rowles – esteemed colleague of David Rush and David Corrigan from the time when they worked at, and presided over, Rennick & Gaynor. Which jokster? The Shadow, always a coward, remains silent.  And don’t forget the bread rolls on the tables.

Our speaker Tim Lane, being a broadcast veteran had some lovely broadcast stories.  The Shadow’s favourite was the TV reporter on Cheviot Beach:  “The search for Prime Minister Harold Holt has come to a dead halt.”.

Changeover Dinner Thursday 23 June
Remember Changeover Dinner Thursday evening 23 June.  An attendance list is being circulated by John Christoffelsz.  If unable to reply via his email invitation please advise him by any more old fashioned means.

Fees Due for 2016-17
With the end of the financial (Rotary) year near and the friendly email from our Treasurer one is  reminded that fees for next year will soon be due.   Doubtless the Front Desk will extend its service and happily accept them in the next couple of weeks or so if a member is unable to use other more sophisticated means.

July 12th External Meeting
A change from the usual Tuesday format is planned for 12 July.

The Camberwell Art Show is being held at Swinbunre, and the plan is for us to have a lunch at Swinburne and then enjoy a tour of the Art Show, with an art expert critic providing commentary.

Please advise  Chris Hanson or Noel Halford of attendance to facilitate catering numbers

Injured List

No news.

Make ups and Apologies

Remember Geoff Wright collates attendance information and he needs to be told of  "make up " events which we attend.

Tell Noel Halford days before of an inability to attend Tuesday.  Late or non apologies raise catering costs.

Also please alert him to attending guests.   Unforeseen higher numbers make problems for a surprised chef in supplying all meals simultaneously.
