President's Highlights

A good first meeting to the new year with the single MC role working well (thanks David Pisterman).  The feedback which I heard reinforced my view that the meeting moved along seamlessly with that approach.

Always great to hear  members own stories (see the article re speaker John Lane ) they are so unpredictable but highly interesting.  Something different too, embedded in John's talk we heard of spouse Di's(Dianne) busy life with hair dressing, then skate board, and lately real estate, businesses....some wide trio. Welcome anytime as a guest, her presence at the meeting and chance to speak to her gave a direct feel to John's remarks.

Makes one think that we have another source of speakers namely close partners and friends of our members?

I am especially looking forward to next week for our offsite meeting at Swinburne and viewing of the Camberwell Art Show, see you all there.

July 12th External Meeting
A change from the usual Tuesday format is planned for 12 July.

We meet at Swinburne in the central foyer area say at 12.45 for 1 pm and thereafter are likely to spend up to 2 hours on site viewing the art and having lunch.     Cost of lunch is $15.     Please bring cash, our club credit card facility will not be there and it may be difficult to use a local one.

The rumor is that there are two hour and other parking spots nearby(?) but who knows on the vacancies, so perhaps shared driving where convenient is the way to go.

Expert comment re the Art will be available too.

Please advise Chris Hanson of attendance to facilitate catering numbers.

Member behind the Badge ..John Lane
John Lane’s life is bound up with music.     As member behind the badge he gave a fluent and interesting account of his travels in life and brought along a wonderful prop being an elaborate decorated guitar which apparently is his most prized possession.
John as speaker at the recent club meeting told how  as a child under the direction of big sister Rae he and two more siblings regularly got involved with creating and playing in neighborhood concerts.  His most first significant recollection was that of being a footman (pushing a Billy-cart) for Cinderella and struggling with a “blood nose” across a stage at the age of about 12.

Interested in electronics as a youngster ( he reminded the oldies in the audience of “crystal” sets) John studied electronics at RMIT but it was the performing aspect of music that got his major interest and effort.

As a young man (still a teenager) he joined “The Mighty Echoes” as a singer, and later guitar player.  His fellows were much older but they  mentored him in music and life skills,  and so he proceeded to  gain a  life time of experience with regular nightly shows at various clubs and bars in Melbourne.(“seedy” was his word for some of the locations).

A first job at “Allans” the musical instrument retailer was natural.   While working he formed a duo act with a friend and banjo player.    “Lane & Logan” had substantial success with regular appearances on variety shows in Melbourne TV and important clubs in the town.

Further retail experiences with other instrument sellers and an eventual desire to move from performer to  his own business saw him start a shop selling vintage musical instruments,  after an initial effort to retail electronic  gear such as sound  amplifiers for bands….at least there was that  connection to his early  studies into electronics.   Highly successful in both of these niche markets John expanded into several retail stores with a wider range of musical instruments and coverage through-out most of Australia.

Semi retired now John is still an avid sailor ( throughout his life) with participation in many of the classic Australian off shore events. He told of his part accompaniment of  adventurer/author Richard Buxton in that persons circumnavigation of Australia by sea, and later by air.

More subdued as the years pass John is now heavily involved with “Sing Australia” . He loves singing in this forum but recounts that he can be put off by a person standing next him and singing flat.    He acknowledges the fact that  obviously like everyone else in the choir they just enjoying singing.   A recent inductee to Rotary , John clearly enjoys community involvement projects  and with his entrepreneurial background and energy will be a great addition to our club…..maybe even leading us in aspects of song and entertainment at functions.

The Shadow Noted

The Shadow reckons that Bernie and Margaret Walshe is the couple that comes closest to being Rotary Hawthorn royalty.  So perhaps it’s reasonable for each of them to hear Happy Birthday being sung in their honour within the space of but a couple of weeks:  At changeover dinner (for Margaret),and at lunch on Tuesday (for Bernie). But of course, we refrain from asking – or even speculating – how many decades and how many years were involved in either case.

Ah, but The Shadow has to admire some of our members’ inventive answers to Rotary questions posed by our MC (new title for the combined positions of Sergeant and Chairman) David Pisterman.  For example “Who is the current president of Rotary International?”  “Barak Obama”  “I agree with him”  “I like his answer” etc. (True answer: John Germ – as confirmed by Jill Weeks after consulting her smart phone!)

Not only having a senior role in the Girl Guides movement with its  "Brownies"  and so on, The Shadow had to admire Anne Scott's  fund raising for them by selling product, i.e "biscuits".  Many HRC members, including a past DG left laden with them.

Articles for the Bulletin/Web
Thanks to all members who have recently sent the editor articles including photos for inclusion in the Bulletin.

It is always a pleasure to get them. Can I please encourage all members to continue that practice.

Easiest format is simple email to the editor with the couple or so of paragraphs of prose embodied in that together with any attached photos.  Alternatively an attached Word document is good too.   {Editorial discretion will prevail to limit legal actions!}

Although there is no clear cut distinction, focus of the bulletin is to alert members/friends of future events whereas the Web site is more for interesting longer stories usually on past projects.  Thence contributions may end up in either.
The E Rotary Club
Rotary in Australia is embracing modern communication technology.   Jack Ings past Hawthorn member suffers with the aftermath of knee problems and is limited in movement, but as the following demonstrates he is still very active in Rotary despite a recent bout of ill health.    The "E" club is a great forum for many people, young and old and whatever.

I went and saw Jack yesterday and he is doing well.  Just having some "time-out" in respite for a couple of weeks to really recover from his recent bout of shingles and pneumonia.

If you wished to visit him he is at Ruckers Hill Nursing Home at 14-24 Pearl Street, Northcote 3070, Room 9 (has "Respite" on the door).

He is in good spirits and all set up with his big Apple Mac computer(!) and keeping busy writing lectures for University of the Third Age.

Kind regards
Caroline

Make ups and Apologies

Remember Geoff Wright collates attendance information and he needs to be told of  "make up " events which we attend.

Tell Noel Halford days before of an inability to attend Tuesday.  Late or non apologies raise catering costs.

Also please alert him to attending guests.   Unforeseen higher numbers make problems for a surprised chef in supplying all meals simultaneously.
