Stories
President's Pen
Great to be back hosting my first meeting for 2017 after the various irregular breaks post new year.  Yet another however.

Note in your diaries  that the Tuesday 21 Feb meeting is replaced by the Foundation evening on the 22nd February event (see below).

Wonderful to hear of President Elect's (Katrina Flinn) drivers for next Rotary Year and see those clever but simple video stories about teamwork.  We all will have a role and doubtless Katrina will be seeking to clarify them in the next few weeks.

Aside, I must acknowledge that I have gained a higher respect for those Mother Goose stories now!

A President Elects Perspective....Katrina Finn

It was Katrina Flinn ( President Elect & recent Paul Harris Society inductee) who sneakily spread her address to the club over an extended time, before and after lunch.

While eating each member was faced with a prompting and thought provoking questionnaire about his/her motives for being in Rotary.   Answering succinctly to the common theme behind questions such as  :-  Why do you come to Rotary each week?,  Why is it important? , Why does it matter to you? ,  and So why are you part of Rotary? proved difficult and made one think about oneself.

Those intellectual answers touched on personal development, and altruistic contributions to society while others were more direct citing fun with friends and the camaraderie of doing something worthwhile with mates.

The main body of Katrina’s address started with a wonderful analogy from nature about teamwork.  Flying geese evidently congregate so that each enjoys some uplift from those around it, somewhat like the drag effect which cyclists employ in the “peloton” formation. Energy savings can approach 40%.  Also the continual “honking” of the geese  is perceived to be giving encouragement to each other.

These two features teamwork and support are keys to health in a volunteer club environment.

Touching on next Rotary year Katrina talked about membership, reviews of our existing and possible new projects, and fund raising developments as obvious foci.  Each will be addressed in a concentrated manner at different but limited periods so as to preclude any perpetual diversion.

Cognizant of the roles to be filled and individual members capacity Katrina told how she was in the midst of framing next years team and each members part.  We were reminded of that remark of DG Neville John to “give whatever time you have free however small...that will do”.   Good luck Katrina all past presidents especially understand the task.

The Shadow
The Shadow extends hearty congratulations to Stephen Bowtell (and Lisette)  on their recent marriage.

The thought of an impending tax deduction to him in May was more intriguing.   It was understandable that MC Simon O'Donoghue should fine Stephen accordingly along with others celebrating anniversaries,  but disturbing that some cynical undercurrent applauded Stephen's retort "that now he would have to borrow $2" to pay the fine".
Parking at the Davis Cup
Richard Logan and Ken McNamara organized members to manage the car parking at Kooyong for the recent Davis Cup event.

Those two and stalwart Charles Morrison deserve special thanks for especially filling in time spots where members couldn't.

As reported by Richard over $6000 was collected to swell our charity pot, and moreover Australia won the tie.  All good news with maybe prospects now for another like event in early April.

The usual array of funny stories about "customers"  parking.  The ever present reluctance to  get within "20 feet" of an adjacent parked car, and an occasional "hoon"  driver (Dennis Shore had one alarming moment) but generally generous drivers happy to support Rotary and applaud its efforts.   In short a good opportunity taken to showcase Rotary---the yellow vests and big white hats were most distinctive.

Off Site Session   19th March pm  Goals & Vision
Its early days yet for the 2017/2018 Rotary Year but the incoming team plans an afternoon to explore what members wish as a vision and goals for the club in the future.

For instance what's our best size, style and most efficient use of existing plus any future members in the pursuit of Rotary activities ?     How is time and effort split between that, and maintaining a club where members can simply enjoy coming together?

The plan is to explore questions like these in an open forum on the afternoon of Sunday 19th March kicking off at 1 pm for a couple of hours or so.

All members are invited and subject to a suitable quorum being obtained the session will proceed,  around an appropriate standard framework but modified or evolving to incorporate any earlier input suggested.

Health of Members

No news.

Make-ups and Apologies

There is a NEW process by which ALL members are sought to give a YES yes or NO no late each week via simple email reply re their attendance next meeting.

Lawrence Reddaway and colleagues look to finalize numbers by Friday noon by collating responses.   So the electronic response (or phone)!   This aims to avoid as far as possible catering shortfalls and costs for not needed meals.  Forewarn of any guests at the same time.

Geoff Wright collates attendance information.  So please tell him of  "make up " events which we attend.
