President's Pen

Thanks to David Corrigan for a another "show pinching" performance as MC and Ian Gillies and Ken MacNamara for balancing the books on the front desk.   Spreading the load among members for these various tasks is good.

Kristin Gill our guest speaker talked about the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. She gave us an insight into the complex problems in raising literacy levels of those children (and their families) living in remote areas and how the publishing industry is supporting that foundation in its endeavours.....very interesting.

Enjoy the weekend now Autumn is here

Indigenous Literacy Foundation
Kristin Gill an experienced educator and publisher was an appropriate person to tell the club about another of those effective but low profile non profit organisations which act to make a difference to the underprivileged in Australia.

The title of Indigenous Literacy Foundation sums it up.   The Foundation gifts new books and literacy resources to indigenous kids and families in remote communities.

Its stated goal is “To level the playing field so that all Australian children have the same opportunities to develop a lifelong love of reading”.

Kristin explained that in remote areas indigenous children first learn their native language (verbally only) and ultimately only become exposed to English as second or third language when first at school.   Reading material is foreign and rare for them and so without proactive external intervention illiteracy will persist in their communities.

The foundation has been established for several years, budgets about $1M pa, travels widely through Australia and for example plans to distribute 65,000 books to 230 remote areas in 2017.    The map right highlights these places.

All books are new, and carefully selected to be relevant, have an indigenous link and tailored to the community in question.   Thus randomly collected old books are not favored, and hence the ongoing help from many generous publishers.

Kirstin told of a policy, and examples whereby a story told by a given community is written up and published.   Photos of children from that community posing with the book were wonderful.

Mocktail Party 2 March
The Shadow
The Shadow wonders about self perceptions within the club.   Overhead a couple one of either denomination discussing a recent external event and clearly rationlising the behavior of some parties as "reasonable on the grounds they were elderly".   Such comment gives guidance to The Shadow for his Christmas present list to include a couple mirror sets.

David Corrigan's MC performance yet again impressed The Shadow, always dry fun......for the record David the President's first name is Meredith,  doubtless you self assessed for a fine.

The Shadow was pleased to see John Carre-Riddell among others back after the holiday season....a clear sign our team is getting back to full strength.

Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Friday noon by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.

DIK Day   8 April

We hear of the great things regularly coming out of the DIK store in West Footscray.   As is often noted it is one of the most productive Rotary initiatives.

April 8 is an open day for all to visit, to see what DIK is and help out for a couple of hours or more.

There are a few regulars from HRC who participate.  Open day is an opportunity for others and even friends to go along.

Let me know if you wish to help.
