President's Pen

Bernie Walshe will be hosting our first meeting for 2017 while I take a day off after a hectic Christmas New Year time.

Rotary never stops, its wonderful to see all the ongoing efforts.   Look at the items below.

Welcome back , I will see you all on the 31st January.

First Meeting in 2017...Jan 24
The first club lunch meeting in the New Year  is on Tuesday 24 January.

DIK ....Contribtuions from Many
DIK continues to be a wonderful source for contributions to many communities and equally a heavy demand for manual input from District 9800 Rotarians.

Help is always welcomed, any spare time of members can be utilised.

Here above we have our David Pisterman  and Cheryl (a regular guest at our meetings but a Glenferrie Rotarian) filling in some holiday time at DIK .   Is David getting some direction on how to lift?

Yet another example David Dippie at Donations-in-Kind received a request for two wheelchairs for Timor in November. He quickly loaded two in a container headed that way, and already has received a thank you letter and photos.

Parking for the Kooyong Tennis
While many members enjoyed time at their weekenders and others took holidays elsewhere, the Kooyong Tennis Classic was on from Tues 10th Jan to Friday the 13th.

Many of our stay-at-home members were hard at it controlling car parking for the above event and of course collecting those donations for their efforts...     At times it was slow but nevertheless was good fun as members gossiped.

A comment from one outdoes The Shadow.   "But still, every little helps: we also have benefited from standing around in the sun, swapping lies when business flagged. Did you know Richard Logan had a hole-in-one, or that President Meredith’s car is now officially an “off-road” vehicle?"

Rotary Eye Sumba Program

An initial meeting to discuss the pending Rotary Sumba Eye Program fund raiser for Glenferrie Rotary is set for Monday Jan 23rd.

The province of Sumba is one of three main islands in Nusa Tenggara Timur (Eastern Indonesia). Sumba has a very limited capacity to access general surgery, let alone any specialist surgery.

The Sumba Eye Program, established in 2007, is targeted at delivering eye care services to the people of Sumba and building the capacity of the local and regional health staff to provide effective eye care for the community in Nusa Tenggara Timur.

The event itself is on May 5th Friday at Kew MCG same as 2 years ago.
The venue has been booked and the same Blues band “tentatively” agreed to play.

So the meeting next week is to arrange plans for

-           Catering
-          Advertisement
-          Auction – Silent, loud, both?
-          Ticketing

Every local Rotarian wanting to be involved is most welcome to come to my place for the meeting – Remember that this is a good example of Rotary in the community.   I will be inviting many non Rotarians too.

So  23rd Jan – Monday at 8.00 pm

 Nibbles and wine provided
64 Campbell Street, Kew  (off Normanby Road)
All please RSVP for catering numbers.

New Year Cluster BBQ

The Shores, Pistermans, Cheynes and John Pesutto joined President Meredith at the cluster group barbecue on Tuesday the 10th.

The Alexandra Gardens was the perfect shady area to recover from the hard day’s work, parking cars at the Kooyong Classic.

Even Wee Jock enjoyed the delicacies that “accidentally” slipped off the table.

The Shadow
Even the The Shadow takes a break.   Still The Shadow always invites contributions of interesting snippets of club "life" from any member for print.  One can choose to remain anonymous.   The Editor forwards these to a private mail box for scrutiny.
