President's Note

What a full meeting.    Jill Forsyth from Kew RC told us of their ongoing success of the " Rotary shop" in Camberwell and presented the club $1000 in recognition of member David Pisterman's consistent help there (note there is always room for other helpers--see David).

Then member Ian Gillies' personal Foundation contribution and the club's Paul Harris award saw him accept a double acknowledgement.  Peter Lugg decidedly hobbling better came up to the podium to acknowledge his Paul Harris recognition too and alert us to his address next week on Beds for Cambodia.  Well done Ian and Peter.

Finally speaker Robert MacGuirk from Melbourne RC (standing in for Kerry Kornhauser) gave an account of Rotary's involvement in a project to eradicate  trachoma among the indigenous communities of northern and central Australia.

All done a good meeting with fine stints as sergeant and chairman by Simon O'Donoghue and Gordon Cheyne respectively and members present.  Thanks all

See you next week.
Katrina

Robert MacGuirk...Trachoma and Rotary

What is Trachoma?  We used to call trachoma sandy blight (the eyes feel gritty, as if full of sand).

Evidently the  world’s prime cause of infectious blindness, it is due to  the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis.  We heard from guest speaker Robert McGuirk that it  leads to eyelid swelling and eventual scarring which in turn causes the eyelashes to turn inward and scratch the eye. Untreated this scratching clouds the cornea and the person incurs irreversible blindness.

Robert is a Melbourne Rotarian (VP) and chair of their Indigenous Committee.  A trained lawyer who in recent times has turned to technology with his own company in the IT game (and especially security), he noted how in search of a worthwhile project he was inspired by the WHO goal  to eliminate trachoma by 2020.  As with such projects one needs a long term champion(s) to sustain efforts and Robert is clearly heavily involved.    Oddly Australia is unique in that it is the only developed country with the problem, it being prevalent in our dryer inland areas among indigenous citizens.   The dry conditions and lacking basic hygienic practices, such as regular face washing allow the condition to develop.

A joint Australian project embraces this 2020-21 goal for Australia too.  Many organisations including governments, commerce, community bodies and Rotary  interact (see website www.endtrachoma2020.org.au ). Robert explained the structure of the project and how key in addition to the provision of specialist optometry skill, funding seeks to establish ongoing relationships with local indigenous communities and maintain efforts to encourage impacted communities to for instance ensure clean water supplies and good hygiene.

Hawthorn Voices of a Generation
The cold morning of the 27th did not deter two members Ngaire Cannon and David Owen representing HRC from attending an event designed to encourage young students in Hawthorn to speak publicly.

A regular event organised by local MP and HRC member John Pesutto  saw 10 secondary school students from local schools give a five minute address on some topic relevant to our community and nation.  They were all excellent.  Our two attending members amazingly were in agreement as to the best.  One wonders if the judging panel of local leaders came up with the  same result.

Extending from 9.30 to 11.30  it was both enjoyable and humbling to observe these talented young people.    Doubtless on again next year it is recommended to members.

It was a fine precursor for our forthcoming public speaking training sessions at  Swinburne University---Ngaire, Charlotte England and or David Rush  have information  on that.

The Shadow
Gossip about club members is The Shadows basic food.   According to one noted senior member anything goes "after all they are Rotarians" and thus can accommodate any tale.    Mmmmm..  maybe so, but  The Shadow assures members that he/she is conscious of the laws of privacy etc and with that caveat will accept any contribution, via the editor.

Members Details...update Club Runner

Are your member details correct? And how do I access mine or other member details?

The printed version of the club handbook which was updated last year & will not be  be produced this year (mostly as there was very little change to last year’s details).

Members details can be readily accessed by
1.. Club runner (member area of www.hawthornrotary.org.au)
  • Yes, you can update your own details in Clubrunner, or if not let Gordon know of any changes. Clubrunner access is also required to access club documents and forms plus this is where the  board minutes are stored for access by all members
  • For readily printable member list go to member area/reports/edirectory reports/rotary club of hawthorn-basic list (this list should be the very latest!), and
2.  Clubrunner smartphone app
This app has members details as well as club events, you can phone a member directly from the app.
(You will need your login which is the same as Clubrunner but once only), and

3. Katrina will bring some paper copies of the Basic member list to meetings which will be updated as required.

Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.
