President's Pen
Thanks to Bernie Walshe for running the first meeting for the year.   Feedback told of a great meeting with an interesting presentation by two from the forthcoming Vocation Exchange Team due to go The Philipines.  Best wishes to Michael and Amanda. (see below).

I heard also that there was a rousing National Anthem, lead by an opera singer!   Sorry I missed it.   All have a great Australia Day.

Next meeting is on  7 February as the Davis Cup takes precedence over HRC next week, so I will see you all then!

Next Meeting..Feb 7 (none for 31 Jan)
Despite earlier indications the Davis Round has intervened so that we DO NOT have a meeting on 31 January.

The next club lunch at Kooyong is on Tuesday February 7.

Kooyong Parking Attendants Needed 3,4,5 Feb
Another opportunity for some fellowship, fun and fund raising at the Kooyong car parking venue.   Last month we got about $3400 from a similar event and one can expect the Davis Cup tie between Australia and The Czech Republic to draw an even bigger crowd and with more cars.

Please let either of us know if you(or friend or family member) can fill a two hour spot on the roster, Friday 3 February, Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th.

There are still several empty spots especially on the weekend.

Rotary Group Vocation Exchange D9800/D3820
Amanda Argyros is being sponsored by Hawthorn Rotary in her participation in the forthcoming Group Vocation Exchange between our District 9800 and District D3820.

The four person team from D9800 together with leader Michael Lapina are due to visit that area south of Luzor in The Philippines which is the domain of D3820.  This will occur  soon in mid February for 4 weeks.

The incoming four (plus leader) from D3820 will arrive in Melbourne in anticipation of a parallel stay.  A welcome/bon voyage BBQ for both teams is set for 12 February locally.
( http//www.facebook.com/D9800GVE2017).

It was a privilege to hear from Amanda and Michael at our lunch meeting on their plans for the trip and some facts about The Philippines and the projects in that country in which they will study and participate.

We were reminded that these Rotary exchanges are "vocational" with the goal to learn, contribute and bring back ideas to the home country.   In fact in D9800 terminology they are the renamed "study" exchanges.

Womans Day Breakfast
Its time again for the annual  Woman's Day breakfast/discussion at Crown Casino.  Wednesday 8 March.  Several (men and women) from our club have attended in the past and readily enjoyed it and the range of speakers debating some controversial and relevant topic.     Check with me re any club table.

It is developing a legacy world wide in Rotary as an mechanism to diversify membership.

The Shadow
The Shadow was delighted to hear guest speaker /opera performer Michael take the lead for an Australia Day anthem.   Overhead table talk which acknowledged that his volume(wonderfully in tune) even surpassed that of one named Joe.......   Testimony that nothing is impossible.

MC(or is it Sergeant) and fines generator Trevor Jones added to the uniqueness of the day by catching a couple of rarely punished victims.
