Stories
President's Ponderings

It was great to have a larger gathering than normal for our most recent lunch; and our guests included younger (Shane McInnes) as well as some more senior people.  Ron Iddles was our star attraction, and he held us spell bound with stories and opinions.

I was glad that Colette Mintz, our nominee who has just won the D9800 Graduate Scholar award for 2016-17, was able to attend our lunch so that we could congratulate her in person.  She will be off to New York in August to study at Columbia University.

There are several events coming up very soon, and you’ll find the information below.  My favourite is the Friends of Baguia Trivia Night on 6 May; and it would be great if a few more Rotary Hawthorn members could join Gordon Cheyne and myself at that event.

Ron Iddles...Homicide Investigations

That's Rod Iddles above having captured the audience's attention, and at right at the podium.

Ron Iddles as guest speaker drew a large number of guest attendees to hear his address.   Ron is the Secretary and CEO of the Victorian Police Association and a well known and respected contributor/commentator on topical law and order issues.  However with over 30 years service in the Police Forces with 25 years as a Senior Investigator in homicide cases Ron’s address concentrated on his observations and stories of such cases.

Reasons behind homicides are difficult to determine but Ron noted that in his time society and resultant human behaviour has changed and is still changing rapidly.  Concepts of family units are different, and especially modes and degrees of personal communication are far different.  An individual can be readily isolated and that fact alone can see him/her suffer and respond in an anti social and violent manner.

Ron demonstrated the investigator's basic approach to a suspicious death and demonstrated the three keys points of the approach by reference to examples and stories of his own experiences.   First step was to identify the deceased and catalogue all their connections, second establish the cause of death and finally consider the possible motives behind the death.

Against this framework Ron almost held the audience spellbound as he told of his experiences and cases.

The Shadow Noted

Even Rotarians sometimes decide to sell their houses. The Shadow has heard a whisper that the home of a certain senior member of Rotary Hawthorn will be auctioned on Saturday. Let’s hope that the auctioneer (who is rumoured to be another senior member of Rotary Hawthorn) gets a good price!

With seniority comes the acceptability of going away for the month of May to warmer climes.  The Shadow, jealous yet again, wishes Charles Morrison and Jacqui all the best for their trip to Exmouth, Broome and other places in the North West.  Apparently Bernie Walshe will be taking over as (temporary) tsar of the front desk!

An Interesting Suggestion
Stop Press! Rotary Hawthorn to Assist City of Greater Geelong

The Editor notes there is within our group some creative thinkers.   One can't vouch the source but supposedly the Victorian Government has asked for help for a suitable panel of administrators to take over the running of the Geelong council after the sacking the existing council.

Our man has suggested that Rotary Hawthorn will offer :-

· No flamboyant clothes:  all our members would qualify
· Experience as councillor and Mayor:  Meredith Butler
· Financial planning: Bernie Walshe, Chris Hanson, Ian Gillies
· Engineering:  Noel McInnes, Lawrence Reddaway, Ian Warren
· Fund raising: Brian Reid
· Insurance: John Christoffelsz
· Legal: David Corrigan, David Rush
· Accounting: John Higgins, David Owen
· Travel (experienced in arranging junkets):  Trevor Jones
· Experience as a city administrator:  Ken McNamara
· Property management: Richard Logan, Ian Macfarlane, Simon O’Donoghue

One  speculates if  President Lawrence should  compile a package deal whereby Rotary Hawthorn would charge a single fee.  What's the lot above worth?  Maybe a small part solution to our fund raising problems!

Make ups and Apologies

Remember Geoff Wright collates attendance information and he needs to be told of  "make up " events which we attend.

Tell Noel Halford days before of an inability to attend Tuesday.  Late or non apologies raise catering costs.

Also please alert him to attending guests.   Unforeseen higher numbers make problems for a surprised chef in supplying all meals simultaneously.
