President's Pen

Another great week.  Lots of interest and fellowship on Tuesday at the Walter And Eliza Institute excursion.     Thanks Jill Weekes for organising.   These occasional events are nice diversions from the usual weekly meeting at Kooyong.

Then again on Wednesday morning many of us were at Auburn High School acting as prospective mock employers in interviewing year 9-10 students.  For most (students) this was a new and hopefully not too stressful experience, for the interviewers very enjoyable and worthwhile.  It is a good example of a low cost community oriented project in which our Rotary club can participate.  Thanks to all members and spouses who attended.

Day Out at the Walter & Eliza Institute
Over 30 members and friends of Hawthorn Rotary took the opportunity last Tuesday to travel to Parkville and indulge in a tour of the Walter and Eliza  Institute, Australia's world renowned medical research laboratory. Currently served by more that 800 scientists its activities today concentrate on cancer, infectious diseases and immune system defects.

W & E hostess Sally Cane looked after us.  She had a concisely defined one hour program.   Thank you Sally.

The facility/building itself was very impressive.  Recent additions hid the fact that the institute has just celebrated its 100 years.  An "anniversary cake" in the foyer and a magnificent  time line along the length of  the entrance corridor highlighting its achievements and that of past personnel dispelled that.

The combination of a short generic promotional film, and then specific presentations by scientists on a couple of examples of the laboratory's current research on insulin/diabetes, and macular degeneration were well received. Later questions from the audience occasionally had personal  thrusts, particularly when  the issue of the role genetics to disease arose!

Most fascinating was a short animated film on one topic cleverly portraying complex human  biochemical  processes.  Our generally non-science oriented audience followed with interest.

Subsequently we were toured one laboratory.   The technicians were able to ignore us and happily concentrate on their work apparently extracting and cataloging various samples of tissue(?) for testing and examination.   It  was a snapshot to the sheer complexity of their work and the enduring diligence required of medical scientists today.

Following the visit most walked the 100 metres or so to Naughton's  for a pleasant pub lunch.

With many making photos of the event that are too many to photos to view, so I’ve loaded a set here:  https://goo.gl/photos/NACTvdi8XayDChwB6 .  (Gordon Cheyne)

The Shadow
The Shadow went to the Walter & Eliza Institute too and was delighted to see Lawrence Reddaway peering intently down a microscope at arthritic contrasts.   Is cycling good for you or not?

Also heard a remark that if "any of us have problems there is an abundance of medical skill on call".    It was comforting to The Shadow until another recalled an old address to the club by a heart attack survivor.  Aside from that address was that said speaker's trauma occurred while at a medical researchers ball.  Yet it was a guest cardiac nurse who immediately got the CPR going while the rest well...thought & researched.

The Shadow wonders if Dennis Shore and Linda have some inside to the goings on at Naughton's Hotel where the club lunched after the W & E visit.   Linda won the raffle and Dennis asked for and a got a burger without beetroot...how un-Australian.

Good Morning at Auburn High ..Interviewing for real?
In the past couple of years Hawthorn Rotary has provided members to interview students at Auburn High School.
The students were required to submit applications for perceived "jobs"  and then be interviewed by us HRC "employers".

Last Wednesday morning 18 of our number interviewed over 40 year 9-10 students who had applied for such jobs.   Potential Barista's were common with a sprinkling of other professions such as teaching assistants and personal trainers.

Feedback from the school and students was rewarding.    It was wonderful to see how in a few short minutes our interviewers were able to interact with, calm down and provide positive feedback to the generally initially nervous students about the skills needed in dealing with an interview.

For our part it was a pleasure to meet some very talented students with interesting stories and backgrounds.   In retrospect recalling ourselves at fifteen or sixteen years most our of us conceded to an unfavorable comparison.

The school values the project and has planned for a second set of interviews in late May 2017 for another batch of students.   More to follow about volunteer interviewers needed.

DIK Day   8 April

We hear of the great things regularly coming out of the DIK store in West Footscray.   As is often noted it is one of the most productive Rotary initiatives.

April 8 is an open day for all to visit, to see what DIK is and help out for a couple of hours or more.

There are a few regulars from HRC who participate.  Open day is an opportunity for others and even friends to go along.

Let me know if you wish to help.

Friends of Baguia Evening...2 May
A significant project relationship which Hawthorn Rotary has developed in recent years concerns support for people in the Baguia region of Timor Leste.   Our links with the group Friends of Baguia is part of this.

Friends of Baguia is hosting a special one-time screening of the film Time To Draw the Line, Tuesday May 2nd, 7 pm at Palace Cinemas Como. This film is about East Timor and that nation's desire to settle it's long running boundary dispute with Australia.

The film includes footage of projects in Baguia.  Friends of Baguia president Derarca O'Mahony is one of the people interviewed and she will be introducing the film.   It is a great film to update yourself on this issue.

To reserve your tickets, please visit the Demand Film Event Page by clicking on the link below:

Unlike a traditional movie showing, my Demand Film screening requires a minimum number of tickets to be reserved. They need another 39 tickets be reserved in the next 50 days in order for the screening to occur.

FOB need your help if they are going to make this event happen!  They would love to see you in the audience, and would really appreciate  help  spreading the word.  Tell your other friends and have them join them for this special one-time screening of Time to Draw the Line!

Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.
