President's Note

It was an action filled meeting this week, highlighted by the induction of Mark Christoffelsz as a Rotary Hawthorn member, as well as the formal presentation of a Paul Harris Fellow (4 sapphire) to long time member Charles Morrison for service to the Club (as announced at the Changeover dinner).

We had an entertaining Sergeant’s session by David Corrigan

Mark Christoffelsz, explained how easy it is to apply for a Working with Children’s card, the first part of the process is online and then the application process is completed at a Post Office (The GPO will also take your photo).

If you do not have a WWC , please get on and get this done!

I look forward to seeing you next week at a very a special meeting which is being held on Wednesday 9th August, see you then.

See you next week.
Katrina

Those Hospital Beds in Cambodia....Peter Lugg

The Eastern Health Beds Project kicked off in April 2016.  Box Hill Hospital had had an upgrade and excess hospital beds were available for free.  It’s history that driven by members Gordon Cheyne and Peter Lugg and the DIK unit these beds were sent to Cambodia in the following October.  This container load cost only $2100 to send but involved considerable personal club member effort all of which in retrospect (see further) was worthwhile.

Member Peter Lugg addressed the lunch meeting with some background on how those beds were ultimately  placed in a hospital in Phnom Penh Cambodia.  Affectionately previously “The old monks Hospital", it is now the major hospital for servicing (around 80% ) of treated trauma events in Cambodia.

During the course of that address Peter gave an insight into the prevalence of such trauma incidents in that country.  Road accident and work place events were very widespread by our standards as were domestic violence happenings.  Community disregard for these problems magnified the problems.

Hospital administration was often deficient, with the potential for corrupt individuals in senior positions to inhibit progress and minimize the value of contributions from external sources e.g. Rotary.  Yet as Peter noted that when the right officials were in place much could be done, and we heard of how the said beds ex Australia had been integrated into the hospital—many into ICU wards.

Working With Children....1 August New Rules
The changes to the certification and other requirements to those working with Children are operative from 1 August.

District legal rep David Whiting gave a short address on some of the detail of the new law.   There are probably two key relevant aspects for us.    That's David with "host member" Brian Reid warming up.

First individuals administratively can easily gain certification (subject to an absence of some dark past) as new member Mark Christoffelsz told.

Second and less straightforward under the new rules was when such certification is needed by club members and what other processes must the club adhere to pursuant to the rules.   One hears on radio talk back etc many specific instances where the public is confused and application of the rules apparently vague.    David's short address lifted some of the fog but did alert us to a need for some overt policy statements and obligations.

District is having a morning workshop session(10 to 12.30) on August 20 at  Tab Corp Park Melton to lead clubs through the maize.     We have registered at least one attendant and others are invited to come----check with President Katrina re that.

Induction of New & Recognition of Old
Inducting a new member to the club is always a fine occasion.   Last meeting Mark Christofflelsz (carrying on from his late father John) joined the club.   That's Phil Stewart doing the honors with the badge on a wary Mark while Janine Christoffelsz looks on.       Welcome Mark.

Not to be out done by youth one of our more seasoned members Charles Morrison (a Rotarian since 1962) and still very much involved in the club gave a very polished and gracious thank you address on receiving a 4 Sapphire Paul Harris Award.     Experience does have benefits.  Thanks Charles.

Servants CommunityHousing  update
1.  Sheridan Brown mentioned a chance for HR gardeners to ply their skill at Servants Housing in Kew soon.   More to follow as times for a couple of hours working bee are defined--keep watch and sharpen those spades/shears in readiness.

2  Message from Amanda Donohoe CEO,  Servants Community Housing

As you know Servants Community Housing took part in Run Melbourne on July 30th, as Team Servants. The Team is a group of residents, staff, supporters and friends, walking and running distances from 6km to 21km. In the lead up, we are enjoyed training together with our partners at Visions Fitness Centre, and have been raising funds through our individual networks.

I am reaching out to our local Rotary groups to ask for help. Specifically, we are asking for support via donation to the efforts of our participating residents who have walked the 6km and having others recognise their involvement through donation has and is encouraging for them.

We do all of our fundraising online - we have a team page, where our members and fundraising goals are visible. You can view it here;

To assist in donations to residents in particular, we have also put together a list on our website. By clicking on a resident’s photo, you can go directly to their fundraising profile page. That can be found here;

This year the goal as a team is to raise $15,000, with the money set to go toward opening a fourth Servants house - specifically for women who have been traumatised by domestic violence.

Members Details...update Club Runner

Are your member details correct? And how do I access mine or other member details?

The printed version of the club handbook which was updated last year & will not be  be produced this year (mostly as there was very little change to last year’s details).

Members details can be readily accessed by
1.. Club runner (member area of www.hawthornrotary.org.au)
  • Yes, you can update your own details in Clubrunner, or if not let Gordon know of any changes. Clubrunner access is also required to access club documents and forms plus this is where the  board minutes are stored for access by all members
  • For readily printable member list go to member area/reports/edirectory reports/rotary club of hawthorn-basic list (this list should be the very latest!), and
2.  Clubrunner smartphone app
This app has members details as well as club events, you can phone a member directly from the app.
(You will need your login which is the same as Clubrunner but once only), and

3. Katrina will bring some paper copies of the Basic member list to meetings which will be updated as required.

Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.

New Treatment Approaches in Alzheimer’s Disease

Currently available Alzheimer’s treatments are of limited benefit. With the number of cases worldwide expected to triple in the next 30 years, there is an urgent need to find treatments that treat the cause of the disease, rather than just mask the symptoms. Steve Macfarlane has been running Alzheimer’s trials for almost 20 years, including a Melbourne-based study of a new drug, Anavex 2-73, in which patients have shown signs of significant benefit

‘When Melbourne was selected as the first city in the world to test Anavex a year ago, lead researcher Associate Professor Steve Macfarlane had no idea how much of an impact it would make.

‘……seem to be significantly improved in terms of what they can do. It is function that has improved and in many cases mood as well,” Prof Macfarlane said.

‘To me, seeing real improvements to patients is much more important than seeing a statistically significant improvement on a rating scale’. (news.com.au)
