President's Note

What an interesting and varied speaker program we are having this year. A big thanks to Jill Weeks (Club Program) her efforts in this regard and to the members that contributed ideas.

I really enjoyed the talk yesterday by Senior Constable Jo Pokiri on community safety and particularly her tips on home security. The talk was particularly relevant given next weeks Community Safety Forum to be held next Friday (details below). It would be good to have a contingent of members at this event particularly as it is being held as a result of concerns raised by members of our Club.

I’m looking forward to our Thursday night's meeting , hearing Di Gillies talk about the work of Interplast and meeting new people ...

I have updated our calendar with upcoming events. Check it out on our Website under News/ Rotary Hawthorn events calendar (or under Events on your Clubrunner smart phone app)

Some important upcoming dates are:

Evening of Thursday 16th November: Filipino BBQ & talk on Disasteraid at the Auburn Bowls Club

Paris to Provence parking -an important fundraiser, keep at eye out for the roster

Sunday 17th December-annual Christmas lunch for the socially isolated

See you next week!

Jo Pokiri   Boorondara Crime Prevention Officer
Senior Constable Jo Pokiri with Victoria Police is presently the Boorondara Crime Prevention Officer.  With a delightful Irish brogue, she kept the lunch meeting fully involved with her talk on policing practices in our district and some common-sense crime prevention tips.   The audience lapped it up and happily took advantage of her hospitality to go beyond time in answering many questions.

Joe’s outgoing and friendly style is well suited to her representation role.   One wonders how with 4 children how she maintains that outlook!   Still as she explained after joining the force in 2010 she has had a variety of assignments, starting with general duties and then a Family Violence focus.   Here her interaction with victims, and helping them understand their rights etc. gave her a lot of satisfaction.   It is understandable that there was a natural path flowing to her current representation role. Today she regularly makes presentations on home security and personal safety.

In the course of her talk some sobering facts were evidenced.    Family violence is widespread-elder abuse is one often disregarded but an important element of that---the majority of calls for police attendance in our district comes from family disturbance issues.

The major thrust of the address was about home security and here the audience attention was high.
Burglaries and their prevention was key.    Jo noted most could be prevented by application of simple common-sense practices by the home owner.   Open windows and unlocked doors and cars abound!  So, called Security doors are not made for purpose.

The whole point of any burglar deterrent should be to slow the offender down.  Opportunistic thieves (which most cases involve) seeking ready cash generally for drug use, want easy targets and to be and out in a few minutes.   A good noisy dog and simple security devices which stall intruder entrance help.

On a different note Jo stressed the importance of community participation.   Hence one should not be  fearful of getting involved by reporting to police some unusual behavior or alarm sounds---the police are far more sympathetic to a false call than no call at all.

Jo summed it up  in two phrases.     “Slow them down"  and "Advise or Report”

The Shadow
Those elves (Gordon Cheyne related) have been very constructive in keeping the bulletin alive while the editor was on holidays...story is that their industry and skill will embarrass the editor hitherto.   The Shadow noted that  unphased, and tanned by the Jordanian and Egyptian sun David Owen was back at lunch but  nevertheless overtly highly appreciative of the wee folk.

The Shadow wondered why Geoff Wright's credit card payment blew the system for over an hour.   Was it his mighty account balance or David Pisterman's operator prowess?   Clearly another issue for any banking Royal Commission.      The Shadow can comment like all computer systems some deep expertise was called upon to rectify the matter.   Eventually all units were turned off including removing the battery and restarted.    Success, however The Shadow worries that this approach will present difficulties with forthcoming driverless cars.

World Polio Day
How Rotary clubs are celebrating World Polio Day (24th October)
From red ponchos to pub crawls, Rotary clubs are coming up with a variety of ways to promote polio eradication in October. In eastern Ontario and western Quebec, Canada, thousands of Rotary members will put on red ponchos and march through the streets of their towns to raise awareness.
What should we do to celebrate?  Pub crawl?  Hmmmmm . . . .

Community Safety Forum
Community Safety Forum - Friday 27 October 2017

Community Safety Month is a safety awareness program held annually in October. To support this initiative, the City of Boroondara is holding a community safety forum on Friday 27 October 2017 in the Parkview Room at the Camberwell Civic Precinct (8 Inglesby Road, Camberwell) from 5pm to 6:30pm.

At the forum, a panel comprising the Hon. Josh Frydenberg MP (Member for Kooyong), John Pesutto MP (Member for Hawthorn and Shadow Attorney-General), and Inspector Stephen Noy (Local Area Commander - Eastern Region, Division 1, Boroondara) and Cr. Philip Healy (Mayor of Boroondara), will provide you with an overview of the safety initiatives in place or proposed at a federal, state and local level.

There will also be a facilitated question and answer session to enable you to ask questions of the panel members.

We all have a role in making our communities safer and so it is with great pleasure that I invite and encourage you to join me at the forum.

For catering purposes, can you please RSVP to Elizabeth Manou, Acting Governance Projects Officer via email at elizabeth.manou@boroondara.vic.gov.au or on 9278 4473 by 24 October 2017.

Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.
