President's Pen

Thanks to MC Trevor Jones (and welcome home after an exciting world trip) for  leading the way with some fun fines.    Presenting that video clip of himself landing in Helsinki, viewed from the aircraft tail camera, was fascinating but equally infected us all with the travel bug.

The team from MLC with year 10 girls Emily, Charolette, and Ella with teacher Lisa Gatliff told of their experiences in Tanzania at Masai villages and schools.  It was a great follow on from past speaker's Tracey Sawyer report on the Testigo activities there.  Great to have young people so keen to participate.

See you next week

Tanzania..MLC Trip....Testigo & St Judes
MLC, Kew offers various international excursions.  One open to year 10 girls is the trip to Tanzania …The School of St Jude Tour.

Students Emily, Charlotte ad Ella with help from MLC staff member Lisa Gatliff, addressed us on their experiences and observations on the trip.

Centred on the northern regions of Tanzania where the Maasai people live, the girls told of Testigo–Africa projects (recall the Tracey Sawyer presentation on permaculture initiatives), and the education system.

Photos of unique and substantial vegetable plots developed by the Maasai under the Testigo initiatives highlighted the commitment and skill of all (mainly the women—the men were and still are nomadic herd tenderers).

These photos showed how in a harsh dry terrains, scarce water supplies had been used in the villages to create a mini agricultural industry.   This provided improved food and trading options for the communities.

They stayed for a time at The School of St Jude.  This is now a highly successful school. Remember it is funded by various charitable sources including Rotary.   The MLC team told of the local students enthusiasm, academic success and support for the school after graduation….many spend their first year as young adults in service at St Judes.

The contrast of St Judes with government schools they visited was dramatic for the MLC team.  Government policy invokes exams in years 5, 7 and 9 such that only about half each time pass and proceed to subsequent school years.  Resources and teachers were very limited, student-teacher ratios higher, and living conditions poorer.  St Jude’s provided regular meals for students.

A 60th Birthday Bash .. Camberwell RC
Surely it must make one feel old when one's offspring celebrates 60 years.

Several Hawthorn Rotarians joined Camberwell RC to celebrate their 60th Anniversary at Hawthorn Town Hall recently.

Camberwell acknowledged the role of Hawthorn RC in establishing their Club 60 years ago, with the Art Show as a project.  President Meredith offered a toast to the club, and we all enjoyed the fellowship and entertainment.

No evidence of regret although member David Pisterman seems shocked.

The Shadow
MC Trevor Jones was on the ball after another world tour with his travel business.   Literally just off the plane he nevertheless excelled with the fine session.   Welcome home Trevor!

No, Gordon, as you know, there is no such thing as a free dinner!  You may have (at the RC Camberwell 60th anniversary dinner) won a raffle for a free dinner, but the Sergeant subsequently levied a fine from you.  Good value, though at $1.  And lucky President Meredith similarly acquired, for a Sergeant’s $1, a (very good value!) pearl necklace.       The Shadow admires good bargains and quick MC repartee.

Occasionally our estimate of attendance at lunch is badly wrong. Like this week we predicted attendance of 27, but actually 37 people attended.  Oooops!  The Shadow can only congratulate the Kooyong Tennis Club catering team who were, indeed, (just) able to satisfy all 37 mouths.

The Shadow, cleverly using Dr Google, understands that Thirteenth Beach is part of the 7 km long section of coast near Barwon Heads. So?  President Meredith has revealed that she and Geoff will be renting a house there for a week; and that perhaps she will host a Rotary Hawthorn event there.  No doubt, when the date is known, our cars will be flooding through Geelong!

And lastly not usually a political commentator but, The Shadow thinks that the suggestion by one member that Lorraine McInnes (Noels spouse) will  take the USA Cabinet role as "Arts Secretary" is pushing it.

Still the evidence is mounting....................

 Christmas Lunch for Boroondara Community
It on again.   Our annual Christmas Dinner function for those disadvantaged Boroondara is set for Sunday 18 December.    A good time, a little earlier than usual and probably less encroaching on the time tables of members own Christmas plans.

As always we will need many hands in preparing food on the Saturday before (the 17th), and others on the day helping out in the kitchen, serving and transporting people.   Please let me know ASAP how you can help and what time you are free.
