President's Pen

Another good meeting highlighted by those hats albeit only a few ladies plus Denis and Chris ventured into the action.

Despite the limited turn up of hats and Phil Stewart's politically correct umpiring  I think we should have another day with a like theme.  Be warned.

Thanks to a fascinating story from Jane Pennington on how a simple thought can develop to a significant program of help and an exciting time for those Rotarian partners who participated in the excursion to Honiara in the Solomon Islands.

See you next Tuesday and have a great weekend,

Meredith

"Days for Girls"  in the Solomon Islands
Jane Pennington from North Balwyn RC originally joined Rotary in 1997 in Puna India.  Jane a long time associate of the Girl Guide movement and a recent President at North Balwyn Rotary has been a serious contributor to the community.

As guest speaker she explained that that clubs membership is predominantly men (sounds familiar) and there was a drive by the partners to identify a special project in which they could be directly involved.

The Solomon Island is a country composed of 900+  islands just to our North but very undeveloped by any standards.  Honiara is the capital.   Its per-capita GDP is low, and more than 75% of its labour force is engaged in subsistence and fishing.  Civil conflicts since about  2000 has seen units of our Australian police force stationed there--Jane commented that the last units are due to leave soon.

Village life dominates and the young women/girls have limited educational and skill development opportunities. Jane and her team noted that simple things like feminine hygiene goods/garments are rare and sought out to do something about it.

So they fabricated a range of such items, and set up a scheme by which the local girls could be taught to duplicate that with ongoing sewing workshops to make panties, pads and like.

Jane and the team made templates and samples in Australia, traveled to Honiaria and stayed with the Salesian Sisters  at Henderson, not far from the capital, Honiara, Guadalcanal.   There are four Sisters in the community who established a girls' hostel  in 2010.  It accommodates up to 36 young women from all over the country and girls can complete their education, study and learn valuable employment and life skills.

There the team enjoyed the hospitality of the Sisters and company of the girls (singing concerts/sessions were especially enjoyed) and taught the girls how to use sewing machines and make the hygiene kits.  Word spread and girls from other communities now visit the hostel and partake in regular lessons to learn the fabrication technique.  Materials and sewing machines are limited of course and key to sustaining future production.

Photos of the Sisters, the North Balwyn RC team, the sewing machines and the smiling girls were a delight and a reminder of how a simple concept can prosper to an ongoing project of self help in a lesser developed region.

The Shadow
Almost all of us forgot it was a wear-a-hat lunch.  Your shell-shocked-Shadow-shnoop didn’t remember, even whilst wondering why Dennis Shore was wearing his hat indoors!  PhilStewart, somehow appointed to judge which hat was the best, wisely adopted the safest judging criterion – gender!  Congratulations to Anne Scott for wearing a very fetching hat.  But The Shadow, ever the pedant, still wonders: “Why was it hat day?”  (Maybe we need a Royal Commission?  Or a Plebiscite?)

Still it did invoke one very senior member at one table to sing and hum "Where did you get that hat?   The Shadow suspects it to be a 19th century tune. (For those Googlers who have never heard of it.)

Bill Troedel is one of those wonderful members who still come to Rotary Hawthorn lunch – albeit not every week – despite now living in Barwon Heads.  The Shadow understands that the house that Bill & Prue are having built now has a roof on – and, during the current heavy rains , no leaks have yet been discovered.

The Shadow Invites Gossip
“The Shadow is always looking out for new news and rumour; and any member with news or rumour is always welcome to help The Shadow by sending material to the The Shadow via the editor.”
DIK Activity again for Cambodia

On Thursday our keen DIK team loaded medical material from a container in Warranwood, into the DIK truck. Theatre operating lights, a wheeled hospital dispensing cabinet and an Ultrasound machine were the heaviest components, followed by boxes of surgical drills and tools. To finish off, we loaded some children’s toys, bicycles and books.

The truck then went across town to the DIK Store in West Footscray, where we unloaded the goods. I suspect that to comply with the bill of lading, we will need to do some sorting out and re-packing the boxes, before we add them to the growing pallets intended for Cambodia. More fun for next week!

Our photo, taken by DIK stalwart Alan Fryday, show the neatly loaded truck, with myself, Andy the driver, Peter Lugg and Ian Macfarlane.

We give a special thanks to them, and to Lawrence Reddaway and Richard Logan, who had offered to help but were deemed “not required” at the last minute.
