Attendance at the committee lunch meeting was modest, but the enthusiasm high as the various committees each with a different focus were assigned a table at which to reflect/plan. With President Meredith Hayes conducting proceedings each table reappraised their plans for the future, added some new thoughts while indulging in a fair amount of chatter "fun" or is it "fellowship" for the assigned lunch period.
Back to business in due course a spokesman from each table outlined to the meeting updates on each committee's projects, conclusions and new matters for consideration by the Board and club.
Those at Table 1 who addressed funding issues and projects reported back to the meeting of the heavy near term need for "all hands on deck" with the forthcoming rapid sequence of planned activities. The Garden fest weekend on 11/12 November, the Como parking, the Christmas Hams delivery and then the Kooyong Tennis parking in early January for 4 days Tuesday to Friday (no weekends this year) will all need our strong involvement.
The spokesman from Table 2 cataloged the clubs sponsorship of attendees to District activities in RYPEN and MUNA, and a desire to do so for RYLA and sought help from the meeting to help identify candidates for the latter. The clubs own projects namely the Mock Interview program for Year 10 students at Auburn High School and the Public Speaking course/promotion for Swinburn University students are both locked in for early next year--again significant club manpower will be needed.
The report from Table 3 reiterated one of Rotary's drivers, namely for members while partaking community service pursuits to ensure a healthy club spirit and invoke planned fellowship times. The President's cocktail party on 23 October at Athelstan at 5 pm is the first, to be followed by a "bowls" occasion at Auburn, the Christmas party (likely with a reinstated auction) and a home -hosting dinner evening whereby groups of members and partners (6-8 at each location) enjoy a meal and company different to those with who they usually mix.
Those at Table 4 addressed the issue of Rotary's and the club's profile in the community with an eye to encouraging outsiders to join. It was an appropriate scene setter earlier in the meeting when the President reminded all that Rotary has some very high profile and wonderful stories to tell for example re Polio, Mental Health and the imminent "Lift the Lid Day" when seeking donation from the public. We should be proud to tell about them.
Table 4 noted that the two key club "banners" now by necessity in electronic digital format , the bulletin and the Web Site both serve as a conduit to the public. The first only indirectly as its main aim is to keep members informed but latter the "Web Site" provides great opportunity and so plans are to interact with Swinburn ET students to enhance it. Other suggestions were for a joint (with Glenferrie RC) ad in the Kooyong Tennis Club offering guest attendance at a Rotary club lunch or evening meeting, a more distinctive attire (Polo shirt, cap etc ) for members visible in the community on projects and some small handout ( e.g badge, pin) less prone to be readily binned.
