President's Note

It was wonderful to see so many members and guests at our lunch time meeting this week to hear Ian Bentley, President Elect give his Member Behind the Badge presentation. It was also good to meet Declan Negus who we are sponsoring to attend RYLA camp next month. We look forward to hearing about Declan’s experience in due course.

Last Thursday night we held our second evening meeting at Auburn Hotel with friend of the Club and Rotary Interplast Liaison Di Gillies talk about important  work of Interplast. Some casual networking followed the presentation. Thanks to all the members that attended the evening.

Last Monday, the inaugural Boroondara Cares golf day organised by Rotary Hawthorn’s Noel Halford, was held at Box Hill Golf Course. I understand that it was a terrific day with over 70 golfers raising money for Chances Scholarships. Well done Noel!

Community Safety Forum
Tomorrow        Community Safety Forum - Friday 27 October 2017

Community Safety Month is a safety awareness program held annually in October. To support this initiative, the City of Boroondara is holding a community safety forum on Friday 27 October 2017 in the Parkview Room at the Camberwell Civic Precinct (8 Inglesby Road, Camberwell) from 5pm to 6:30pm.

At the forum, a panel comprising the Hon. Josh Frydenberg MP (Member for Kooyong), John Pesutto MP (Member for Hawthorn and Shadow Attorney-General), and Inspector Stephen Noy (Local Area Commander - Eastern Region, Division 1, Boroondara) and Cr. Philip Healy (Mayor of Boroondara), will provide you with an overview of the safety initiatives in place or proposed at a federal, state and local level.

There will also be a facilitated question and answer session to enable you to ask questions of the panel members.

We all have a role in making our communities safer and so it is with great pleasure that I invite and encourage you to join me at the forum.

For catering purposes, can you please RSVP to Elizabeth Manou, Acting Governance Projects Officer via email at elizabeth.manou@boroondara.vic.gov.au or on 9278 4473 by 24 October 2017.

Ian Bentley...an Educator behind the Badge

Hawthorn born, and persistent resident Ian Bentley is president  elect despite being relatively new to the club.   Well done.   However there is a past Rotarian ethos there.   At the outset of his member behind the badge address he noted that this was the third occasion on which he has told his story and failing to retrieve those past two scripts warned of a fresh one.    The warning was unnecessary as the audience got a wonderful polished account of Ian's drivers and his experiences in, and thoughts of educational practice now and in the past few decades.

Ian's outlined a career as an educator but more than that.   The "teacher" element was only a small part of his work,  at various times he has eagerly embraced those extra circular and administrative roles which many teachers avoid.    Roles ranging from athletic master, sports coach to science teachers association leader are typical of the many related areas in which he has  been very heavily involved.

In reliving his career Ian touched on a philosophical note about how key moments (akin to the "Sliding Door" concept) determined his path.   First as a bio-science graduate a choice was made to pursue a career in education rather than post graduate research.    Then a simple prompt from one of his colleagues at his first college appointment lead him to apply for a science master role at Carey Grammar.

Ian spent 22 years at Carey in various roles , including an exchange year in the Cotswolds and gave us an insight into his personal development(learning as he put it) as a person and educator.   Ian's enthusiasm for education came through.   His connection with students did too---photos of past students triggered stories of their subsequent achievements .   One got the impression that there were very few that Ian could not personally recall.

Always keen to face new  challenges, there was a  senior role at Kingswood College for six years.   Retirement after that was short-lived.  A casual part time Science Education lectureship became permanent and even now similar activity at Deakin University is followed.

Ian and Jane (that's them above after 44 years married) have three adult children all successfully pursuing careers one in finance, one in law and the other is psychology.   There was an amusing contrast by Ian of the athletic iron-man son with the more sedate daughters.  Ian openly (tactfully?) attributed a lot of his happiness, and past achievements to support from Jane.    One feels that the club will be in good presidential hands next year with the Bentley team.

The Shadow
The Shadow is not golfer and has sympathy with that notoriety who said "Golf spoils a good walk".  (who was it? ..the old hands should know).

To compound matters last meeting we not only heard of the recent Boroondara Cares golf day ---yes it a good fund raiser well done guys---but faced a barrage of trivia questions on golf rules from Sergeant Kevin Rose.     Worse to follow.   Overheard that Richard Logan who has played each of the last  seven days is shortly going to the USA with another golf tragic Chris Hanson to play golf in Oregon.  While failing to understand The Shadow applauds such commitment to a hobby and wishes the twosome bon voyage .
RYLA ...  awardee   Declan Negus

RYLA is  "Rotary Youth Leadership Award"  .   It is a weeklong residential program.    It seeks to develop leadership, personal development and social skills so awardees can more effectively contribute to the community.

Hawthorn Rotary is sponsoring Declan Negus (pictured at left).    Youth Director Kevin Rose introduced Declan to the last meeting and we heard Declan's thoughts and ambitions on his attending the camp later this year at Mt Evalyn.   With just one minute given to him Declan impressed with his clarity and enthusiasm for the forthcoming week. (3-9 December).    The club wishes him well.

Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.
