Summer’s here at last and a reminder to me of how quickly the Rotary Year goes. Thanks to Geoff Wright as MC and genie story teller. Another good fellowship session complete with verbal reports from the various committees. Details of achievements and plans highlighted the need for sustained action. Two big events, the Christmas luncheon and the Tennis Parking loom, and will keep us very busy.
The Fellowship/Committee lunch meeting heard reports about our Boroondara Cares involvement (David Pisterman), Vocational and Youth plans for HR and District (Kevin Rose), The Cancer Relay for Life (Noel Halford), Fund Raising pursuits (Richard Logan), DIK links (Gordon Cheyne) , enhancing Public Image (Dennis Shore) and participating in Rotary’s own charity namely Foundation.
This was all good stuff which promoted input from the body of members present.
Under the umbrella of the Administration Unit's report, matters re the nature of regular meetings, observations of practice at other Rotary clubs (Newport Rhode Island in the USA was a fine example) and feedback from non-members (“Friends”) close to the club were discussed. Views on our approach varied.
Interesting to hear about Rotary Newport (USA ) where there is a speaker only once per month. And The Shadow was fascinated to overhear some Rotary Hawthorn members preferring our status quo. Vive La Difference! But where does the majority lie?
The Shadow was glad to hear reference to Helen Roberts – widow of PP Neil Roberts – and how she enjoys receiving our weekly emailed Bulletin. It seems that there are no less than 90 names on our ClubRunner Friends of Rotary Hawthorn list.
Acronyms are all the go, and The Shadow tests members of Rotary Hawthorn. P2PP (see below) ?
There must have been hardly a dry in the room when Joe Devereux announced that, after 27 years participating in, and representing Rotary Hawthorn at, the International Golfing Fellowship of Rotary, he has now retired from IGFR. It’s surely time for someone else to step up, as urged by Joe, and join that most compatible and enjoyable group. Maybe Chris Hanson (our king of holes-in-one)?
P2PP ? Paris to Provence Parking. Of course, the site of our recent car parking exploits.
Remember our Christmas Lunch function for some special people in the Boroondara Community is on Sunday 18 December.
Still developing the roster for, the food prep on the Saturday before (the 17th), and the roles on the day helping out in the kitchen, serving and transporting people.
Slowly filling the spots, more hands always welcome.
This year the tennis runs from Tuesday 10 January to Friday 13 January. As such there is no need for weekend parking monitors, but yet some on the final day who are not superstitious.
Please try and lock in your stint (if available) before we suspend meetings.
Delighted to have firmed contact with Auburn High School re their student development program for mock interviews to give students experience in applying for jobs.
They have allocated two days Wednesday March 15 and Wednesday May 24 and invited Hawthorn Rotary members to act as interviewers for an hour or so.
Keep those mornings free if you consider yourself suitable.
Remember, please: Geoff Wright collates attendance information. So please tell him of "make up " events which we attend.
Also, please tell Lawrence Reddaway by Friday noon of any expected absence from lunch on Tuesday. (Late or non apologies can raise our catering costs.)
Furthermore, please alert Lawrence to any attending guests so that he can include them in his estimate for the Kooyong caterers, and prepare name tags.
