Stories
President's Pen

Swinburne University has been the centre of club activity this last week.   First there was the Camberwell Art Show and our excursion or  meeting there Tuesday and then the "debate" sessions which our club had promoted with the students.

The Art  excursion was  a nice change to our regular lunch time meeting,  thanks  Chris (Hanson) for  coordinating our visit and thanks for the Pics Gordon (Cheyne) (see below) – you do deserve a medal for all the memories being captured.

The debates went well.   DG Neville Johns offered the following plaudits.

Public Speaking –Swinburne

Congratulations to Rotary Hawthorn on this wonderful initiative. It was an inspiring experience and demonstrated the true spirit of 'Rotary Serving Humanity', and how our wonderful nation gained the reputation for being one that embodies connection, a sense of belonging, promoting trust and offering an equal opportunity to participate. We aren't perfect at it but for decades Australians have done pretty well. Humanity is a quality we owe each other and this program has amazing potential to grow. There are challenges of course, and I believe Rotary has a part to play in this space.
Well done again.

Best regards,   Neville

Excursion to The Camberwell Art Show

That's Ngaire Cannon examining the three top awarded items....the winning entry is in the center.

For those members who braved the miserable cold weather and attended the Camberwell Art Show as our regular weekly meeting they were not disappointed.   It was great and warm inside.

The Show has been an event for 51 years and often the venue by which some of the world’s most renowned and capable “water colour”  artists (many of whom reside in Melbourne evidently) exhibit  and regularly share in the prizes and awards.    Again there were several water colours on show, but equally there were oils, pastels and various other types.

Introduced by the President of Camberwell Rotary Nick Pane we were soon absorbed in the intricacies of picture art as explained by renowned critics and judges while being treated to finger food and drinks during the viewing.   To his great surprise our art illiterate but nameless author could readily equate to the tireless impressions and tonal contrast and drama of the items in the first room with the mute patterns and colour contrasts in works in another room.   Aspects of artistic “sensitivity “ in some works were however unfortunately less obvious.

The story of this year’s winner’s contribution was wonderful.(Perfume Bottles)   An amateur but obviously highly skilled artist with no real expectations of success saw her work contributed  to the show by her husband. Moreover he placed a very modest $500 as the asking price for sale.   The asking price for most works on display was typically $3000 plus.  The judge told of the lady’s surprise when being contacted to attend the Show as winner the next day.  First prize was $25000.

As our photographer explains, there are lots of photos of our visit to the Camberwell Rotary Art Show.

One can see  Camberwell President Nick Pane, and Brenda Innes telling us a bit about the art, and Professor of Art History at Melbourne University Ken Wach’s delivering his erudite dissertation, but  NOT ONE photo of our revered President Meredith. Many so-called art cognescenti, but no Meredith!  So sorry!

Public Speaking and Debating

Another of our Vocational initiatives has been interaction with Swinburne University and providing support to some students in their endeavors to learn public speaking and debating skills.

Last week at Swinburne some of our directly involved mentor members were present in this pursuit along with others providing that tension generated by a real audience as the students went through their paces in a staged series of  short debates.   Gentle but kind instructive criticism prevailed.

The Shadow Noted
The Shadow at the Art Show Lunch

Ah, when will this esteemed club start to recognise the virtues of public transport?  The Shadow reckons that, given the difficulty with car parking, the best way to get to Swinburne Uni, for the Camberwell Art Show, would have been by chauffeur-driven train!

After a mere 51 years of dong it, Rotary Camberwell sure knows how to run a good art show.  In amongst the crowded hubbub, there were lots of reasons why no-one seemed to be buying any of the fabulously skilful paintings on display.
·         John & Di Lane were heard to claim that they had no more spare walls sans paintings; and they refused to repeat an earlier triumph of putting art on a ceiling.  The Shadow’s brain goes even shadowier at the thought!)
·         Richard Logan explained that when he and Pru moved house they employed a consultant to decide what artwork went where.  (The Shadow reckons that must have been cheaper than  a year of marriage guidance counselling!)
·         John Carre Riddell said that he was unable to find anything expensive enough to fit his price range.  (The Shadow saw pink pigs flying past the window!)

Yes, Rotary Hawthorn was displaying its inventiveness rather than its generosity!

Finally The Shadow extends congratulations to Noel Halford.  Noel is much more than a singular hard working Rotarian volunteer, he has also volunteered for many years at Phillip Island (Smiths Beach Association) and was recently awarded with Life Membership for his role as Secretary.  One wonders what other volunteer organisations he is also in ....no political comments please.

Articles for the Bulletin/Web
Remember member journalist contributors, the Editor and Web Site manager are always delighted to get articles including photos for inclusion in the Bulletin and or Web site.

Easiest format is simple email  with the couple or so of paragraphs of prose embodied in that together with any attached photos.  Alternatively an attached Word document is good too.   {Editorial discretion will prevail to limit legal actions!}

Although there is no clear cut distinction there is a broad set of drivers.

  • The Bulletin is an internal opportunity  for Members to know what Rotary Hawthorn is about to do.
  • The Website is an external opportunity for the community to know what Rotary Hawthorn has been doing.
  • Object for both mediums is:
    • Short and sweet
    • Reports to be interesting

Make ups and Apologies

Remember Geoff Wright collates attendance information and he needs to be told of  "make up " events which we attend.

Tell Noel Halford days before of an inability to attend Tuesday.  Late or non apologies raise catering costs.

Also please alert him to attending guests.   Unforeseen higher numbers make problems for a surprised chef in supplying all meals simultaneously.
