Vic Burns at one of our concerts, and that mischievous grin.
I first met Victor Burns in 1956 when I joined Rennick & Gaynor as an Articled clerk and Victor occupied an adjoining suite on the 6th Floor of the Eagle Star building in Bourke St. He was Secretary to numerous Housing Societies which were very popular at that time and he was a great friend of my principal Bernard Gaynor. Vic subsequently moved his premises to Burwood Road Hawthorn and joined the Hawthorn Rotary Club about 1974 and became President in 1980.
My most memorable recollection concerning Vic was in 1995 when our club conducted the annual Rotary Conference at Darling Harbour (Sydney) and Vic was charged with organising our club’s Restaurant night which coincided with St Patricks Day namely 17th March.
For the occasion I painted my old National Service Boots Green and when dressing for the event in my hotel room , discovered a large tack in one boot which resulted in me standing on one side of the hotel door in my underpants and the concierge on the other side with a pair of plyers.
When we got to the festivities Vic was there in a green jacket he had borrowed from a leprechaun and the night went from bad to worse from there. Vic had a wonderful sense of humour and could tell jokes while all the time maintaining a Tobin Bros face.
Vale to a real character.
