President's Pen

What a terrific evening we had on Sunday at Athelston – thanks to Di, John, John & Simon.

Fellowship Day was another great opportunity to share ideas, suggestions and to make plans for the coming month.  Thank you everyone.  I encourage you to meet on the other weeks of the month to ensure those plans develop into great outcomes.  I know some are already working to ensure that they will be able to report back on the actions taken through the month at our next Fellowship Day.  And to share my first action – Ian Gillies has kindly agreed to chair our future Fellowship Days.

See you in 2 weeks as next week is Melbourne Cup.

Good Luck!

A Great Rotary Project DIK
To the outsider one may wonder what Rotary is about.   The Bulletin will run a series of items to remind members (and friends) of just how Rotary volunteers participate.

Here is an example in which Hawthorn Rotary is heavily involved in more way than one, both literally with our manpower and lifting but also annual financial support ........DIK or Donations In Kind.    With DIK especially, there is always  an opportunity for everyone no matter where they are located or the time available, to get involved and make a difference.

The DIK concept involves retrieving items from the public, often excess materials or that from unused production runs or perceived redundant equipment at for instance Hospitals, and storing and cataloging them at warehouses.  Our efforts concern the West Footscray Store which is part of the National Rotary Donations In Kind Store network.   DIK is Rotary Australia’s largest ongoing project.

Collected goods are provided free to those in need both in Australia and overseas.

With proximity to Asia much of the overseas push goes there, and most recently to Timor.  In our club, member Peter Lugg's (that's him above in the warehouse) connection with and awareness of Cambodia's medical needs has been the catalyst to retrieve and distribute surplus hospital beds from Melbourne to some regional hospitals in that country.

Fellowship Lunch Time Meeting
Tuesdays lunch meeting  enhanced fellowship and concentrated members thoughts on forthcoming projects with an aim to act on improved approaches and new projects.

Three full tables discussed a range of matters.   Reports from a designated chairperson from each to the full meeting promoted broader discussion and formulated some near term actions.

Topics covered matters of regular DIK manning, identification of candidates for Rotary scholarships, extended connection with local youth (Auburn High School), fund raising ideas and above all raising public awareness of Hawthorn Rotary through a regular signature event or available media.

Finally there was a reminder that volunteers for near term fund raising projects are needed. One can contribute always at anytime to ease the load of others.

The Local Rotary Opp Shop
A notable guest at the last lunch meeting was Jill Forsyth from fellow rotary Cluster club Kew.   Perhaps not readily known Jill told of her clubs involvement with an "Opp" shop in Camberwell.   It is behind about 654 Burke Road in the large car park.

It sources collectibles from local Rotary clubs, and we were invited to clean out our garages and rarely touched cupboards for items such as colored glass, cookware, shoes, caps, music, jewelery, books and whatever.  Constrained by the modest space available big things like furniture could not be taken however.

With its everyday operation Jill noted that volunteers from Hawthorn would be most welcome to man the shop and help say a day at a time.
