President's Note

Another nice meeting as we approach year end.   Thanks to Lien Trinh and Fabienne Nichola for their address.

Notwithstanding the coming holiday period we have much to do on our projects.      Throw in the "hams" funds raising venture (please get those orders into Phil Stewart and team asap) it seems to me that this is our busiest period during the year so contributions however small from all hands will be gratefully received.

These are the things to come starting tonight at the Auburn Bowls club:-

6.30pm , Thursday 16th November: Filipino BBQ & talk on Disasteraid at the Auburn Bowls Club

Paris to Provence parking 24th -26th November-an important fundraiser, keep an eye out for the roster.

The annual club Xmas meeting/event. Dinner on 12th December (jointly with Glenferrie)

Sunday 17th December-annual Christmas lunch for the socially isolated.

Tuesday 19th December break up meeting.

See you in a next week

Lien Trinh....The End Trachoma Project
Back in July this year Robert MacGuirk- a lawyer by training-  gave us an administrative perspective of the Australia wide project  (involving many organisations including Rotary) seeking to eradicate the eye disease Trachoma in indigenous and remote Australian communities.

Lien Trinh was our last guest speaker.     She holds a Bachelor of Optometry from the University of Melbourne, Master of Optometry from the University of NSW, and Master of Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She has experience working in a variety of low-income settings internationally and throughout Australia, providing eye-care services as well as building local eye personnel capacity through teaching, research and evaluation.

There are quotes of her personal driver that she "wants to live in a world where avoidable forms of vision impairment don’t exist, where individuals are empowered, and human diversity is celebrated".

Appropriately then Lien is currently engaged by the Rotary Club of Melbourne to coordinate their End Trachoma by 2020 campaign and provide that technical expertise necessary.      As such her address gave an account of that and some experiences and issues which have arisen.    This project is personally endorsed by RI President Ian Riseley.

She also works with the Welcome Dinner Project; an initiative connecting those newly arrived to Australia with established Australians.   In and around Melbourne, this  project  aims to improve social cohesion and strengthen the community by providing an opportunity for newly arrived people to Australia and established Australians to meet, understand and know each other. Liens coordination role invokes  liaising with networks, and organising events within the community, with new migrant groups, city councils, community centres and the local media,     In some small way Hawthorn Rotary's annual Christmas Dinner for the socially isolated touches on this.

Past Rotary Scholar in Attendance

That's past Rotary Scholarship awardee Halen Kambouras with member Hans Carlborg.    It always a delight to see those with past  Rotary connections at our meetings and a reminder of how  Rotary support can sustain goodwill and be an acknowledged positive factor in the life-journey of many.

Report  Foundation Film Night   8th Nov

Susie Cole, District 9800 Polio Chair  organised a night at the movies being the : 'Murder On the Orient Express' .

and naturally the proceeds were in support of  the ongoing End Polio campaign.  David Rush was there along with a few other from Hawthorn RC and reports:-

The event was to raise funds  for the Rotary Foundation

For every ticket purchased there was $30.00 for the Foundation because of the matching arrangements with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Members attending were Rush, Corrigan, Reddaway, Wright, Shore, Cheyne and Katrina with some friends

Some members returned for fellowship at our trusty venue Deco at Camberwell Junction( convenient for the Rushes!)

That was a pretty good response from RCH.

The Shadow
The Shadow was saddened by the passing of past president Terry Perree (1993-94) and a reminder of how time moves.  Alas The Shadow well recalls that time like yesterday.

Looking at the President's note The Shadow is heartened by the  list of forthcoming projects.   The opportunity for stories of members antics at them is strong.    Parking is always  fruitful---quotes such as "Just  wave your arms, they will sort themselves out"  and " Those men could couldn't control anything---put them on fee collection duty"  and "Sorry sir but membership at the Manangatang football club doesn't provide free parking here in South Yarra" come to mind.      The Shadow offers a prize for any additions this year (anonymous of course!)

Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.

The Glass Soldier
The Glass Soldier

'Don Farrands is the grandson of the Glass Soldier, NH Ferguson.  Don is a commercial lawyer, chartered accountant, and director.  He has significant and varied experience in law, commerce, the arts, and community organisations including in the disability sector.  He lives in Melbourne.

This is the true story of a young Australian soldier whose life of opportunity was challenged by trauma and salvaged by strength.

Nelson Ferguson, from Ballarat, was a stretcher-bearer on the Western Front in France in World War I. He survived the dangers of stretcher-bearing in some of Australias most horrific battles: the Somme, Bullecourt, Ypres and Villers-Bretonneux. In April 1918, at Villers-Bretonneux, he was severely gassed. His eyes were traumatised, his lungs damaged.

Upon his return home, he met and married Madeline, the love of his life, started a family, and resumed his career teaching art. But eventually the effects of the mustard gas claimed his eyesight, ending his career. Courageously enduring this consequence of war, he continued contributing to society by assisting his son and son-in-law in their stained-glass window business. Advances in medicine finally restored his sight in 1968, allowing him to yet again appreciate the beauty around him, before his death in 1976.

The story of this Anzac will stir your soul. It is a story of war and bravery, pain and strength, hope and miracles'.
