President's Ponderings
Will be back next week.   Thank you VP Henry Drury for the very gentlemanly and professional control of the last meeting.  Enjoy your grandfathering and child care break.. if one can.

Wonderful to hear (my contacts are everywhere) of Tom Burns address and Betty's (Burns) visit and the meetings toast to Vic who could not attend.

Lawrence
Ph. D. Student Tom Burns..Brain Research

Tom Burns is the grandson of long term past member Vic Burns.  It was a family occasion for the “Burns” with Vic’s son Greg, and spouse Betty, guests to the address by Tom on bioethics and neuroscience.  Vic not present, was fondly toasted and thought of in his late life battle with age.  Chairman David Rosback led the way.

We learnt that Tom is a PhD student in the Physiology unit of the medical science/science faculty(s) at Monash University, and conducting research into the brain activity of rats (we were assured with some parallel to understanding the human neuron functions).  All this was done by recording and analysing the rats electrical brain activity and the impact of external stimuli as detected by the pickup of signals on electrodes inserted into the brain.  For instance it was fascinating to note the different record of such activity in response to a picture of the Mona Lisa as against aboriginal art.

The address was far from that of a narrow scientific researcher.  Tom is not that.  Only 24 he has gained a Young Achievers Award from Melbourne Rotary, is president of a group for Students of Brain Research, was a Bioethics Fellow at the World Health Organization (UN linked) and travelled to conferences on bioethics overseas, and above all very aware  of the importance of networking within the science community.

Very personable and open Tom if his pursues his natural career course/goals (post doctoral roles at Oxford and or Japan with ultimate academic leadership at an appropriate university) will be one of those rare scientists who can take the public along with them.

An example of this latter quality was Tom’s presentation of some old family snaps (including containing Vic..see below) in his address as a way to engage with the audience on a very technical subject, the mix was perfect.

A young Tom is in the middle front row with the dark shirt, and Vic in the second row left.  How time flys.

Packing Beds at Box Hill Hospital
The DIK (Donation in Kind) focus was at the forefront again recently.   Surplus hospital beds at Box Hill Hospital were bound for Cambodia via the DIK warehouse process in Footscray.

Last Saturday, the early birds were there at 8.00 am, and started wheeling the beds in the basement. When the loading team were ready, relays wheeled the beds up to the ground floor, then to the loading yard. As the beds had been checked and prepared earlier in the week, they were ready to be loaded once the heads and ends, mattresses and drip stands were removed.

By the time Peter Lugg got off the plane from Cambodia and arrived at the hospital (10.00) we had packed up and gone. (Peter had just visited rural hospitals in Cambodia, some with two or three persons in a bed. So we know they will go somewhere that they will be used and appreciated.)

I wouldn’t have believed we could have had the job done so quickly, but thanks to the wonderful DIK team’s planning and expertise, we did it!

We even had interstate visitors helping, and of course we had free advice from the two Past District Governors in attendance  ;-)

Thanks to everyone who helped, and to those who couldn’t make it: get well soon.

Green Thumbs
A couple of our number attended last Saturday evening's 30th Service Committee anniversary celebration, most notably regular green thumb Ngaire Cannon.

Recall our clubs effort in building those Green Houses last year under project leader Sheridan Brown.

In the course of the anniversary evening Ngaire casually asked if they were still standing?  The spontaneous and sincere answer was "great", the ensuing vegetable crop and simple pleasure for residents in gardening have both been prolific.

Aside.... The Garden Design Feast in which we will be providing hosts is on again in November.

The Shadow Noted
Golf is an odd sport.  Who was it said it spoils a good walk.  The Shadow was amused to hear of two club members and golfers (hackers) who last week ventured down to the Mornington Peninsula with some other mates to play at St Andrews.  It rained continuously and was bitterly cold.  Although journeying to the course, Member A abstained, doing a Sorrento coffee shop tour with another, while Member B played through the elements with others.  They all joined up for lunch.

The Shadow is impressed with first the sound judgment of A and second the tenacity of B, and the diversity which certainly exists in our club.

It is an odd sport, but golfers are odder.

Changeover Dinner Thursday 23 June
Remember Changeover Dinner Thursday evening 23 June.  An attendance list is being circulated by John Christoffelsz.  If unable to reply via his email invitation please advise him by any more old fashioned means.
July 12th External Meeting
A change from the usual Tuesday format is planned for 12 July.

The Camberwell Rotary Club is conducting a Rotary Art Show and the plan is for us to have a lunch at Swinburne and then enjoy a tour of the Art Show.

Injured List

Joe Devereux is at home but a bit incapacitated at present.   He would love a telephone call and promises not to hog the conversation.
Make ups and Apologies

Remember Geoff Wright collates attendance information and he needs to be told of  "make up " events which we attend.

Tell Noel Halford days before of an inability to attend Tuesday.  Late or non apologies raise catering costs.

Also please alert him to attending guests.   Unforeseen higher numbers make problems for a surprised chef in supplying all meals simultaneously.
