President's Pen

Well I was very impressed today with Bill Troedel’s fine’s session.  Eloquent, stimulating, entertaining and inclusive.

It was also great to see everyone braving the cold to enjoy the fellowship we have at Hawthorn.  The “member behind the badge” session again proves why these are invaluable for us to get to know each other better.  What an amazing background Hans (Carlborg) has.

A Members Story...Hans Carlborg
It was much traveled and multilingual new member Hans Carlborg who told of his work experiences and long term passions, for golf, snow skiing, and Rotary in his "Behind the Member" address.     That old cliche is still correct..our home grown speakers have wonderful and interesting tales to tell.

Hans Carlborg was educated in Stockholm, England and the USA with engineering specialization. This was interrupted by the obligatory national service in Sweden.   A first job with the “Concord”  project convinced him that he was less of a narrow specialist but more of a broader problem solver/teacher and so when time permitted away from his very serious golf and skiing pursuits (he reached representational status) he joined IBM.

There upon for some years he enjoyed the life of roving expatriate with that company with postings in many European cities,  and for the record Budapest was his favorite.

At the time 1970+ the Cold War was at its peak, still notwithstanding that, Hans worked in the East (Moscow and East Berlin) for IBM on the implementation in those countries of its various management systems and teaching/consulting roles associated with them.   He commented that doubtless his presence was monitored carefully in those places and he consciously, openly,  maintained a strict professional approach to life and work while there.    He  was a regular traveler across “Check Point Charlie” and showed us fascinating images of that from the 1970’s.

With IBM still (he remained with them for 30 years) Hans came to Sydney in the late 70’s and using that as a base and traveled extensively around Asia providing the consulting and teaching services to clients and overseas IBM offices.

In Australia a more subdued settled time prevailed with family and classical musical pursuits.   That years back he had traveled to Poland and took a special trip to see Chopin's home was perhaps a precursor to his later classical musical interests, reportedly regularly singing “Messiah” in the Sydney Opera House.

Never one to stay too long in the one place, more recently Hans left IBM and established an antique business(with his wife) and lived for a time in France in a city renowned for its heritage qualities ( and perhaps antiques).

All this time Rotary has been part of his life.  He has belonged to 5 clubs and rattled off a series of significant projects (generally very local community oriented) in which he had been heavily involved with or driven.  Now with Hawthorn Rotary work with Boroondara communities is foremost in his mind.

Older and less mobile by design, Hans is remarried and now settled in Melbourne with family connections.  He offers the prospect of long term HRC membership  and with energy and drive to get involved with “big’ community projects.

Welcome Hans!

Next Speaker...A Change
Dennis Shore has kindly agreed to defer his address on the changes to Rotary International's inner sanctum and Constitution from next week to a later date so that we take advantage of an address by a one off visitor with a fascinating story to tell.

So next week's address is now not predominantly for Rotarians but for friends too...please extend invitations to them.

Next Tuesday's (2 August) speaker is an Australian woman, Tracey Sawyer, who lives in Tanzania where she helps spread knowledge about Permaculture among the Maasai people.

Tracey is an alumnae of MLC.  She left MLC in 1982 believing in the empowerment of girls and that she could do anything she applied herself to do.

She left a high flying international corporate career to found charity Testigo Africa, after a life changing 40th birthday trip to Tanzania.  Instead of living in London, Hong Kong and Melbourne working as a lawyer, she now has her own mud huts and is transforming the lives of Maasai women, facilitating their shift from pastoralists to household agriculturalists.

Tracey is the CEO and Founder of Testigo Africa.

Colette Mintz..Bon Voyage
We all know that the District 9800 scholarship winner Colette Mintz is to study post grad refugee law for 12 months at Columbia University in New York.   Hawthorn Rotary which was an initial sponsor club has a special "ownership" pride in her and her study plans.

Colette renewed the connection to HRC and those "mentors" in our club who helped select and encouraged her by paying a farewell visit to our lunch meeting just prior to her departure soon.

She already has an identified host connection with a local New York Rotary Club.  President Meredith Hayes took the opportunity to formalize that inter club connection by presenting our club banner to Colette for ongoing presentation and extended HRC's best wishes for an enjoyable and productive trip.

Those more traveled in the audience even contributed suggestions re tourist points and night spots in New York City.

Have a great trip Colette.

The Shadow
The Shadow heard a  rumor that the car of one member's spouse was stolen along with the on board City Link Tag--hopefully just a case of a like named person, as the matter got some airing on talk back radio along with the punch line that City Link was charging the caller $55 for a lost tag.  We await developments and hope it is just a case of a trumped-up item.

Make ups and Apologies

Remember Geoff Wright collates attendance information and he needs to be told of  "make up " events which we attend.

Tell Lawrence Reddaway days before of an inability to attend Tuesday.  Late or non apologies raise catering costs.

Also please alert him to attending guests.   Unforeseen higher numbers make problems for a surprised chef in supplying all meals simultaneously.
