President's Pen

Congratulations to Anne Scott for the three-star Paul Harris award and thanks to Dennis Shore for making the presentation albeit I did do the pinning.  It was in recognition for Anne's long time Rotary efforts.  It is amazing that she has been equally involved in other volunteering roles with the Girl Guides and numerous international projects.    Well deserved Anne.

Heartening address by Peter McGrath talking on the Salvation Army and its part in rehabilitating through regular sport individuals of the community with problems re substance abuse, mental illness and isolation.  Many of us were unaware of the RECLINK programs.

Thanks to those for the updates re the Christmas Hams, the Community Luncheon and Tennis Parking rosters, and of course MC Simon O'Donoghue.

See you at Auburn Bowls next Monday at 5.30.   Should be fun with a family touch.

Salvos and RECLINK...Peter McGrath
What is Reclink

An address by Peter McGrath from SalvoCare-Eastern on one aspect of it, that by which the Salvation Army participates namely sponsorship of the SalvoHawks AFL footy team was informative.   In telling of his personal experiences and observations  with this team we got an broader insight into  Reclink.

Reclink organizes sport and art programs for disadvantaged Australians to create socially inclusive, life-changing opportunities.  It centers on those with past and current issues with substance abuse, mental illness and isolation, in short giving rehabilitation and recovery opportunities.

In conjunction with more than 200 community organizations, Reclink Australia's programs create pathways to improved health and well being, education and employment outcomes for all participants.   It is partnered by the Federal and State governments and agencies , the cities of Sydney and Melbourne and supported in specific pursuits by sporting and cultural bodies.

At a comparative low cost to taxpayers, Reclink Australia is a proven model with extensive reach.   It's a framework by which governments, the community and the corporate sector can be part of a cost-effective solution to the provision of recovery/rehabilitation opportunities for the disadvantaged.

The Shadow
The Shadow loves finding media connections to Rotary Hawthorn.  So a recent promo for a market at Riddells Creek brought a smile to the face.  Thank you Dr John!  (Was it your great great great grandfather?)

Changing a new 3 storey building to have 10 storeys? Clearly nothing is beyond our architect-cum-developer Ian Pohl.

Several Rotarians are building themselves a new house; or extending one; or demolishing one. Or have recently gone through this typically frustrating and demanding process. Noel Halford and Bill Troedel readily come to mind.

But The Shadow knows of only one member undertaking an extension that comprises a celestial observatory, complete with a retracting section of roof!  Noel McInnes reckons he and Lorraine will spend most of their summer nights at Phillip Island becoming amateur astronomers; and most of their summer days watching the waters of Westernport Bay.

Let Them Eat Cake?
According to Phil Stewart our Christmas Hams and Cake order list is developing nicely.  Great.

However he has about 30 extra Rotary cakes available and offers them to members to purchase perhaps for a present for a friend.   I am told by one frugal member that their shelf life is extraordinary .. months to years so even a birthday gift maybe.
Smoked Salmon on Offer

Mah Hoon Tan, a member of Kew Rotary, is the importer of TASSAL into Victoria and is taking orders for 1 kg packs of smoked salmon @$38.

Would you please let Bob Slater know if anyone would like to order any.
 Bob Slater [mailto:bob_slater1@outlook.com

They will be available by 19 December.
Kooyong Car Parking

This year the tennis runs from Tuesday 10 January to Friday 13 January.   As such there is no need for weekend parking monitors, but yet some on the final day who are not superstitious.

Thanks to all those member who have slotted in their name for a stint----remember friends relatives are welcomed too.  We have one last lunch meeting on the 20th December to fill remaining spots...please consider.
