In October 2017 we joined with several of our cluster clubs to participate in a tree-planting day at Hays Paddock in Kew, as inspired by RI President Ian Riseley. Many volunteers turned up and fortunately we had Peter from Parks and Gardens to keep us right. Down and dirty we got, and planted a couple of hundred Poa labillardierei and a couple of other species whose names escaped me. But basically that tussocky native grass, that golfers like Richard Logan hate, for some obscure reason. Athough not exactly trees, the planting provides undergrowth to maintain the soil and appearance of the native garden. President Katrina produced a lovely barbecue which we all enjoyed. (especially the dogs, who had worked so hard to water the freshly planted tussocks).
