Open Day at Donations-in-Kind A couple of years ago, the Donations-in-Kind West Footscray Store celebrated 100,000 hours of volunteer time, saving lots of goods from landfill and sending many containers to Rotary projects overseas. This year we will celebrate despatching container number 500 overseas. You can’t miss the big yellow box! Since the start of 2000 we have shipped $49.2millions value of goods to some 26 countries and saved almost 30million cubic meters of really good material from land fill. Importantly we have raised some $3.2m to cover the shipping costs and run the store. Hospital beds and equipment, computers, clothing – both new and used, school desks and chairs and lots more have all found homes in countries where they have none (or very little). We want to celebrate this milestone and let everyone see what opportunities there are for the taking by opening the store for everyone to see with an open day at the store planned for Saturday 11th March. Come along any time between 10am and 4pm and see what we can do to assist your projects – both local and international. Tea and coffee and a sausage sizzle (obligatory!) and lots of information to get your project juices flowing. We would love to know that you will come and see us. Phone Bob on 0418 102 702 or Laurie on 0428 550 574 to let us know. |

On 25th March 2017 Noel and Lorraine McInnes arrived on Hamilton Island for a relaxing Anniversary celebration. Cyclone Debbie, 2/3 the size of France, and with winds up to 263kph, crashed the party. “24 Hours inside Cyclone Debbie”, is their first hand, illustrated story of the preparation, the lockdown, the aftermath and the evacuation. The red dot on the map is the signal from Noel and Lorraine’s phone located on the inside wall of the eye of Cyclone Debbie at 10:44am on 28th March. M.C. Bill Troedel |

Ever suffered from memory loss? Imagine the predicament of poor Robert Zeinfeld. Found wandering the streets at 4am, without a clue how he got there. Total amnesia! The policeman has to establish who Robert is. Perhaps he hasn’t lost his memory at all. Perhaps it is all an elaborate cover up. The more the policeman digs, the more confused he gets, until he finds himself wrestling a plot with countless twists. Playwright David Tristram has created a hilarious play from an unusual situation. This hilarious comedy is the perfect antidote to the stresses of the day. We will be supporting the well - known Basin Theatre Group for its production on 1st June. This is local theatre at its best. Book now as we have only limited tickets available. Tickets are available at $27.00 and that includes pre-show drinks and nibbles that commence at 7.45p.m. Contact LeLee Tran or Simon O’Donoghue to make your reservation |

Breakthrough? New Treatment Approaches in Alzheimer’s Disease Currently available Alzheimer’s treatments are of limited benefit. With the number of cases worldwide expected to triple in the next 30 years, there is an urgent need to find treatments that treat the cause of the disease, rather than just mask the symptoms. Steve Macfarlane has been running Alzheimer’s trials for almost 20 years, including a Melbourne-based study of a new drug, Anavex 2-73, in which patients have shown signs of significant benefit ‘When Melbourne was selected as the first city in the world to test Anavex a year ago, lead researcher Associate Professor Steve Macfarlane had no idea how much of an impact it would make. ‘……seem to be significantly improved in terms of what they can do. It is function that has improved and in many cases mood as well,” Prof Macfarlane said. ‘To me, seeing real improvements to patients is much more important than seeing a statistically significant improvement on a rating scale’. A Most Compelling and Inspiring Speaker....Note: Meeting At Auburn High School
Aug 22, 2017
Please meet in the foyer of Auburn High School at 11a.m Manny Hendrix Jr gives the 'most compelling and inspiring talks on life skills coaching for young people in both sport and positive lives rather than progression to the ‘dark side’. A high-rated US basketball player, his points included: # Young people commonly become ‘at risk’ because they are not given key information about life choices. In the US he has even taken youngsters - lacking parental and school advisers - to visit a prison and see first-hand where a life style of being on the streets after 1am can lead # Young people set themselves facile goals like sporting heroism and rich lifestyles without understanding that the ‘process’ is the important thing, not the goal. He gave examples from his own sport career - like playing basketball in his childhood while almost clinically blind (he could recognise his team and opponents and court positions but no detail. His sight was then restored). Thereafter, he explained in his talk how he went to extreme lengths and sacrifices to out-compete his cohort and rise through the basketball ranks. Hendrix, who has a 201cm wingspan, made the 2015 and 2016 Division 2 Big V All Star Five and won the 2016 MVP Award. He led Collingwood All Stars into the finals during his first season in the team’s second year. ' Chair: Noel Halford |

Seven Summits and Virgin On Insanity

'I don’t feel as though I’ve ever had a job, but I’ve had several interests for which I’ve been fortunate enough to be paid: ski technician, Antarctic field assistant, Royal Marines Commando, high altitude mountain guide, rock climbing instructor, barista and founding director of the UK based mountaineering company, Jagged Globe. The toughest job I had was being unemployed. When I could climb, I was passionate about sharing the mountains with others, and about my personal rock climbing which has fed my soul all my life. Now I’m passionate about sharing what I’ve learned to others, especially young people. When we’re gone, all we leave behind is the impression we’ve made on others, and young people stand to inherit the most'. Chair: Ian Gillies
