Another opportunity for some fellowship, fun and fund raising at the Kooyong car parking venue. Last month we raised about $3,400 from a similar event and one can expect the Davis Cup tie between Australia and The Czech Republic to draw an even bigger crowd and with more cars. |

'The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute is the oldest research institute in Australia and celebrated its centenary in 2015.Our affiliation with The Royal Melbourne Hospital links research outcomes with clinical practice to accelerate discoveries for health and disease. We offer postgraduate training as the Department of Medical Biology of The University of Melbourne. In 1852 Walter Russell Hall arrived in Australia from England, seeking his fortune in the Victorian goldfields. Despite an inauspicious start he went on to become a very successful and wealthy businessman. In addition to pastoral holdings and mining interests, he became an agent for Cobb & Co, the horse-drawn coach line of Australian history. A consortium of seven, including Walter, invested in the firm in 1861 and turned it into a great success. Hall married Melbourne-born Eliza Rowdon Kirk in 1874'. ------ More details to follow

'The overarching theme for the 2017 Rotary District 9800 conference experience will be Social Cohesion, a critical societal element that research recognises as being seen in communities that prove to be particularly resilient in times of stress. Rotary provides amazing opportunities to serve humanity in a practical and effective way. Come and hear how other Rotarians, the community and business leaders help their local communities and the wider world by joining together, engaging in ideas and taking action to connect communities and lead change. High profile keynote speakers from diverse walks of life will address the theme of ‘Connecting Communities – Serving Humanity’. Our country has long been one of the most culturally diversified and liveable in the world. Explore how our communities work together, learn from each other and build social capital and cohesion. Rotary’s worldwide powerful networks enable us to make a difference in promoting social cohesion and building capacity. The community of Greater Shepparton is a prime example of leadership and innovation in its approach to our theme. Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley are also great places to visit before, during and after the conference. See the excellent art and cultural centres, visit wine and fine food producers, explore local history or just take in the natural beauty of the area. The conference will be fun, relevant and provide insights into community leadership and collaborative projects that are important in developing community resilience, social capital, and building social inclusion'. Open Day at Donations-in-Kind A couple of years ago, the Donations-in-Kind West Footscray Store celebrated 100,000 hours of volunteer time, saving lots of goods from landfill and sending many containers to Rotary projects overseas. This year we will celebrate despatching container number 500 overseas. You can’t miss the big yellow box! Since the start of 2000 we have shipped $49.2millions value of goods to some 26 countries and saved almost 30million cubic meters of really good material from land fill. Importantly we have raised some $3.2m to cover the shipping costs and run the store. Hospital beds and equipment, computers, clothing – both new and used, school desks and chairs and lots more have all found homes in countries where they have none (or very little). We want to celebrate this milestone and let everyone see what opportunities there are for the taking by opening the store for everyone to see with an open day at the store planned for Saturday 11th March. Come along any time between 10am and 4pm and see what we can do to assist your projects – both local and international. Tea and coffee and a sausage sizzle (obligatory!) and lots of information to get your project juices flowing. We would love to know that you will come and see us. Phone Bob on 0418 102 702 or Laurie on 0428 550 574 to let us know. |

Ever suffered from memory loss? Imagine the predicament of poor Robert Zeinfeld. Found wandering the streets at 4am, without a clue how he got there. Total amnesia! The policeman has to establish who Robert is. Perhaps he hasn’t lost his memory at all. Perhaps it is all an elaborate cover up. The more the policeman digs, the more confused he gets, until he finds himself wrestling a plot with countless twists. Playwright David Tristram has created a hilarious play from an unusual situation. This hilarious comedy is the perfect antidote to the stresses of the day. We will be supporting the well - known Basin Theatre Group for its production on 1st June. This is local theatre at its best. Book now as we have only limited tickets available. Tickets are available at $27.00 and that includes pre-show drinks and nibbles that commence at 7.45p.m. Contact LeLee Tran or Simon O’Donoghue to make your reservation |
