Game Changers
May 24, 2016
'Jamin was born in Leongatha in 1990. He grew up seeing how the local footy club was the social glue for the community and connected with all age groups. He attended Leongatha Secondary College and gravitated to leadership positions. When he was 16 he wanted to play footy at AFL level or work in the fitness industry. At a young age he started training with the seniors which was confronting and challenging. He realized how racist, homophobic and politically incorrect was the behaviour of players and noticed that this culture and one of heavy drinking dominated the club and infected the community. Two years later he went to a YMCA camp and to RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award). This gave him exposure to new ideas and the opportunity to appreciate diversity and the breadth of civil society and the problems and challenges facing people across the world and across ethnic and social divides. He found it was difficult to get others to understand there was something wrong with the local culture and found it hard to get young sportsman engaged on the topic. He decided to set up a leadership program for young leaders from footy clubs across the region and formed Captain’s Club. He visited 56 boards of footy clubs and got 56 boards of footy clubs and got them to nominate attendees for the camps. By getting these sporting leaders on-board he hopes will ultimately inculcate the broader community'. Chair: Chris Hanson |

Working with the Maasai in Kenya
Jun 28, 2016
'The Council on Legislation is Rotary's parliament, which meets every 3 years. Every District has an elected representative plus it is attended by Rotary Royalty (the RI Board, a Foundation Trustee representative and Past RI Presidents) who may speak but not vote.
Past Councils have had a reputation for lots of talk but but not much action. That all changed this year with the approval of far reaching changes to Rotary's constitution.
Hear about some of the changes approved by the Council but also the stuff they don't tell you about; how it works, what goes on and what matters'.

Royalty, Romance and Remedies
Aug 09, 2016
From a former Queen’s footman and ten-pound Pom. Tony Atkinson may well be the only ‘commoner’ alive who can share intimate, insider knowledge of what it was like within the walls of Buckingham Palace during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and behind the door of 10 Downing Street during the uniquely colourful days of Winston Churchill. Tony was born within weeks of the Wall Street Crash of 1929, and his life has always been a bit of a bull-and-bear run. After he spent much of his early years in a cage suspended from the sixth-storey window of his parents’ London apartment, it was perhaps no surprise that he would always see the world a little differently. There was that time Tony came between Winston Churchill and his bowel movements (an incident that required a parliamentary explanation); and that time when Tony and his friends unofficially rerouted the London bus network so they could race Stirling Moss around the city; and the high-society shenanigans Tony witnessed after becoming footman to the Queen. Tony has always had a knack for mischief and finding himself at the centre of the action. Characteristically, he features in the most famous photograph of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation – on the cover of this book, with Tony stiflng a laugh after Prince Phillip urged his wife not to ‘drop the bloody thing!’ Even when Tony and the great love of his life, a passionate Irish republican woman called Terry, came to Australia as ten-pound Poms, funny business followed. Tony and his wife, Terry, brought their young family to Australia in 1962, and they settled in the northern suburbs of Melbourne where he practised as a specialist anaesthetist until 2014. He is a former President of the Medico-Legal Society.Lynn Smailes is a Melbourne writer, teacher, manuscript editor, reviewer There is a short video trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?
